Malvern Star Sprint 3
- SL alloy frame for fast, efficient and comfortable riding
- Superlight carbon fork that dampens road vibrations for a smooth ride
- 18-Speed Shimano Sora road gears are light, super tough and will last a lifetime
- Full rack and fender capability for commuting or light touring
Built using a hydroformed aluminium frame, with smooth stylish curves instead of the regular square lines. But it’s not all about appearance, the frame is stiff and responsive, responding well to burst of power when out of the saddle. The frame tends towards long and low, rather than upright, giving a sportier feel. It is fitted with rack and mudguard mounts for practicality.
The forks have carbon blades to dampen the road vibration, thus increasing rider comfort and cutting a little weight, which is not excessive at around 11kg. Certainly lighter than the average flat bar bike at this price.
The drivetrain is Shimano Sora with an 11-32 rear cassette and Sora compact cranks at the front, giving a ratio of 34/50. The splined cranks and sealed bottom bracket ensure long, reliable service. It would make a fast, reliable, yet agile commuter, or simply a fun bike for cruising the bike paths with less effort.
It is fitted with Tektro mini “V” brakes. While not as good as disc brakes in the wet, they provide good, efficient braking, and reduce the overall weight of the bike, and keep the cost down. They certainly provide peace of mind in all but the worst conditions.
The Kenda Kwest tyres are fast (700 x 28) The lively feel of the bike is due in part to the Kwest tyres, but if using in rough conditions (like gravel tracks) the bike may be better with a wider tyre to increase rider comfort, while sacrificing a little performance. Your decision here.
It is fitted with ergonomic grips and a reasonably comfortable saddle, certainly better than many out there.
Overall this is a great bike for little money, it is sporty yet practical and fast and suited to fast commuting, but capable of being made suitable for unmade tracks. As far as I am aware there is nothing around that can compete on the basis of value for money. Try one, you will be impressed.
