Malvern Star Vektor 5.0

Malvern Star commenced building bikes in Australia in 1903. They were a household name in my childhood. It was the brand that I would have loved to be able to afford. Malvern Star have been producing bikes since, but now have many affordable models thanks to more efficient production techniques, and Asian production. The quality is excellent with models that are very competitive with other lesser known brands.

The Vektor is an ideal urban bike, whether for recreation or commuting. The number behind it designates the quality of the components. 3.0, 5.0 and 7.0. 3.0 being the lowest quality. The Vektor 5.0 has lighter forks, and a SRAM X5 27 speed gear system with SRAM cranks, a very reliable drive train.

At $200 off, there are few bikes that can compete in terms of value for money. It comes equipped with hydraulic disc brakes, which are great for braking in any condition, providing safe reliable braking. Disc brakes require little maintenance and the pads are quite inexpensive to replace when they eventually wear out. The bike is equipped with rack and mudguard mounts if required.

The wheels are tough. They have double wall alloy rims, and an unusual feature on bike under $1000 is eyeletted rims which considerably improve the strength. The hubs have sealed bearings and will outlast most hubs. Overall the bike is designed to be extremely reliable, giving years of pleasure for most riders. The 24 speed Shimano gear system has a wide range and will cope with very steep grades if required, providing the rider is up to it.
