XDS Boss Disc
The Boss frame has been made from X6 ultra light aluminium tubing. It is actually made by XDS themselves in their massive complex. This tubing is then double butted to enable them to make a strong, light frame, that not only looks great, but is extremely robust.
XDS BOSS DISC
Sorry, we only have small sizes remaining.
Key Features:
1. Performance-level X6 Ultralite aluminium frame.
2. Shimano Alivio/Deore 27-speed transmission.
3. SR Suntour Raidon XC AIR fork.
4. Shimano hydraulic disc brakes.
5. Double wall aluminium rims.
XDS have worked under relative anonymity for decades as an Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) for decades supplying the world's most sought-after and prestigious brands. They are experts in manufacturing premium level carbon-composite and aluminium frames, as well as being a high volume producer of more cost-effective options.
The BOSS 3.0 is created for the rider seeking to be a little more adventurous or for the consumer that is driven by a touch more quality. Whilst the BOSS 3.0 can still be used on rigorous rail trails, fire roads and unsealed bike paths, its focus is slightly more on off-road applications where the air suspension fork and smoother transmission is better applicable. This is where the Kenda Small Block 8 tyres are so versatile; the small, close spaced tread is a relatively good option for both path use and trails.
XDS is driven by delivering value to consumers. The quality, effort and level of engineering that we see in the BOSS frame is surprising, considering it price point. It's also refreshing to see a brand use a premium chassis to deliver more value to consumers, especially in an industry where cost-cut frame are normal.
Here is a short recapitulation of the key features of the BOSS frame:
1. XDS employ their range-topping X6 ULTRALITE aluminium frame. Compared with equivalent 6061 aluminium frames (such as the Giant Talon 27.5 range), X6 ULTRALITE frames are up to 10% lighter and 35% stronger.
2. The Tapered head tube allows the frame to accommodate a larger than normal down tube. This translates into safer steering and better precision whilst steering through rocks, tree roots and surface irregularities. It makes a difference, that\'s why it\'s such a common feature on performance-level hardtail and dual suspension mountain bikes.
3. The breadth of the down tube and larger diameter seat tube, create a massive bottom bracket (BB) junction. This extra solidity equates to smoother transmission of power to the chassis and better pedalling efficiency. NO FLEX = forward MOVEMENT.
With any quality frame design, stiffness (and therefore efficiency) must be balanced with comfort. Without flex in the right areas, the ride will be too harsh. There are two key areas where flex is created:
1. The seat stays have been thinned and widened to absorb harsh trail shock and vibrations. The vertical flex in this part of the frame enhances comfort and the larger-wide chain stays help keep the back end solid, elimination sideways flex.
2. The thin-wide top tube acts much like a leaf spring. Any vibrations through the front of the bike are dampened through this part of the frame.
A notable feature of the frame is its smooth welds. A laborious process, most manufacturers prefer to keep welds intact to reduce manufacturing costs. It really enhances the appearance of frame and together with internal cable routing, the frame's appearance and quality far surpasses its price point.
The BOSS 3.0 is built with upper-end recreational components. Centred on a 27-speed Shimano transmission, it's been built to suit the rider who wants to get fit through pre-dominantly novice mountain biking.
A Shimano Deore rear derailleur is used because it is suited to rugged trail conditions; the wide link design increases stiffness and strength and its Shadow design lets it tuck in closer to the frame, reducing the likelihood of it getting snagged on tree branch debris and rocks. Another key notable of the transmission is the M4000 Octalink cranks. The cranks use two-piece forged (change the shape of an object using heat and press) arms and Hyperdrive chain rings for smoother, faster shifting between the 3 chain rings. The Octalink axles uses 8 splines for a more robust connection between crank arm-axle interface and therefore also improve power transmission, allowing riders to get up and over tree roots, rocks and logs with better ease.
The Suntour Raidon XC suspension fork is built from lightweight Magnesium for the black lower legs and aluminium sliding tubes. Therefore the package is much lighter than a cheaper fork which will often use Aluminium lower legs and Cr-Mo steel sliding tubes. The Raidon XC features 3 key adjustments; AIR, REBOUND and LOCKOUT.
1. Air pressure is adjusted to suit different rider weights. This adjustment is critical because it gives riders more control and comfort when mountain biking over rugged terrain; the suspension will not be extremely soft or hard but suited to the rider.
2. Rebound control how quickly the fork returns after it has been compressed. Excessively fast or slow isn\'t ideal, but rather it should be fast enough to cope with multiple trail impacts. Rebound is important because it forces the front wheel to hug the terrain, giving riders more control.
3. Speed Lock is a variable lockout and can be adjusted to gradually increase the suspension's firmness until it reaches full lockout. So it's variable and is not ON/OFF like cheaper units.
The Shimano hydraulic disc brakes are the benchmark in braking systems. These have a light feel at the lever, minimising the amount of hand effort required to apply braking power. For those using them for cross country and general riding, braking power is sufficient and are spec'd for the design intent of the BOSS 3.0. They are also very easy to service and parts are readily available.
