Of course you can lug things on your back, but there is a clever solution that may surprise you: A Bike Basket.
Bicycle baskets can be fitted to the front or rear of your bike. If, like many of us, you have a special pet that would love to join you for a ride, there’s even purpose-built pet baskets.

FRONT BASKETS
Are designed to be fixed to the front of your handlebars and not removable quickly. Even though you lose the quick-release functionality, these front baskets do tend to be more stable and robust. For example, this wire mesh basket here.

While the front bike basket, when full, does slightly affect the steering, it only takes a minute or two to get used to it. Maybe try at home first, before venturing out to the shops.
REAR BASKETS
Rear bicycle baskets tend to be higher capacity than the front versions. They require a rear bicycle rack as well, with brands like Topeak working best when matched together.
