ORBEA RALLON 2022

Orbea has engineered the latest Gen 6 Rallon to be a bit of a chameleon.

Oh, and a fast chameleon too.

Not only will it appeal to riders racing Enduro competitively, it can be run as a mullet for those that prefer a bike that’s playful and fun.

A completely new suspension layout delivers a more progressive suspension curve and enormous amounts of grip.

It’s not often that we get excited about a new product launch. Rarely are they innovative. Rarely forward thinking.

So, when the new Rallon hit our radar, we sat up and took notice.

Why?

Because the Rallon is the original Enduro race-weapon. A bike that has been around for almost 20 years. It and the sport have grown and evolved together.

Beta MTB also recently review the Rallon, and here’s what they had to say:

STEEP AND DEEP

Refers to Rallon’s geometry.

The new geo allows Rallon riders to comfortably ride steeper terrain with greater control. And allows the use of deeper insertion for dropper posts, so you can get the seat out of the way.

For those that think this is inconsequential:

Ever had your not-so-slammed dropper hit you in the family jewels when you’re descending?

That’s the exact opposite of pleasant.

And that’s why Steep and Deep matters.

OF COURSE IT CAN MULLET

The Rallon comes with 2 shock mounts.

Most of the Rallon models come in a 29/29 spec - except the Rallon M-Team. However, through the MyO (My Orbea) customisation program you can choose to have the M-Team delivered as a 29/29.

Irrelevant of wheel size, the geometry stays constant.

But why Mullet?

For shorter riders, it means easier weight distribution - especially in the steeps. Because your bum isn’t buzzing the rear tyre.

And it’s easier to maneuver in the air and corner tighter.

That said, all this is subjective and depends on the Rallon rider and their preferred terrain. What’s important is that the Rallon allows you to choose.

SEALED BEARINGS - BUT BETTER

Most cartridge bearings used in suspension pivots rely on the seal the bearing already has.

But guess what?

It’s not enough.

Dirt (and lots of it) quickly deteriorates pivot bearings - then they seize.

This places unwanted stress on the frame, and your rear shock doesn’t perform.

So, Orbea decided to take bearing seals to the next level.

Special seals protect the main pivot bearings and repel water and grit from getting to the bearing.

ALL CARBON IS NOT THE SAME

Defects such as wrinkles, bubbles and excess resin are considered normal by a lot of high-volume brands.

Not Orbea.

These guys cap their production volume every year so as not to risk quality.

Every frame is painted in Spain. Every bike is hand built in Spain.

Orbea partners with Mondragon University (Basque Country) to develop their carbon frames. They have access to the whole Research and Development area to test new profiles, prototypes and ideas.

The new Rallon is made from Orbea Monocoque Race (OMR) carbon. It’s a far more advanced technique than we see employed by other brands.

Some of the tubes are shaped by bladder moulding. Other parts of the Rallon such as the head tube and bottom bracket are moulded by a rigid EPS form. This technique increases the strength-to-weight ratio because less carbon can be used.

All Rallon frames come with a Lifetime Warranty that applies to the original owner.

ASYMMETRY is another ke design aspect of the Rallon’s frame.

Some new enduro bikes are using a “Shock Tunnel” type design. This is inefficient, because it places undue stress on the front triangle.

The Rallon’s shock is moved to drive-side by 12mm. This allows the support on the non-drive side to connect in a more direct path.

This asymmetry neutralizes suspension forces on the frame.

So?

Bearings last longer. Shock works better. And the Rallon delivers instant response to trail input. This equals more grip.

THE SUSPENSION STUFF

One word to describe the Rallon’s suspension - balanced.

The Rallon can put the power down on low-speed corners and technical climbs. But it’s also at home on fast, technical and raw trails.
