    CANNONDALE SYNAPSE HI-MOD ULTEGRA DI2

A technically brilliant endurance road bike, the brand new 2020 Cannondale Synapse Hi-Mod is not only visually stunningly it has the tech to match beneath its metallic champagne coat.

There’s a lot to cover in this preview, so jumping right in:

    WHO IS IT DESIGNED FOR?

The rider who wants total comfort without sacrificing the edge, the response, the speed and reactivity of a true performance-bred road bike.

    Meaning:

You put the power down and it goes. No reluctance. No lag.

    So maybe:

You’re riding an older rider who has been riding a carbon (or aluminium) road bike that’s getting worn out; it doesn’t have disc brakes, it’s far from being comfortable and it sure as hell doesn’t have electronic gears.

You know deep down it’s time to make the move.

    Or:

Where you ride the roads are beaten up. Cracked and coarse they are often dirt and gravel as much as sealed.

    Or:

You’re after a premium commuter or touring bike. You’re into doing long rides and you want one of the best high-end endurance road bikes.

    THE FRAME

Cannondale has always been a quirky brand. They like to do things differently. Sometimes it turns bad - very bad - but mostly they innovate stuff that is jaw dropping.

And that’s where they are comfortable - pushing boundaries.

    Such is the case here.

The concept behind this new Synapse was to make an endurance bike that had racing in its DNA.

You want comfort? It’ll deliver in spades.

But when you want to start pushing your limits and reach that point in space where everything becomes a blur and tunnel vision takes over, the Synapse is designed to respond with speed and accuracy.

Something that older (and some current) endurance bikes still lack.

The Hi-Mod refers to Cannondale’s premium carbon fibre frame. These are the lightest and stiffest in the range. Frame weight measures 950 grams.

That’s 220 grams lighter than the old one. The normal (non Hi-Mod) version is 1,100 grams.

    Either way - that’s a lot.

I mentioned response time and this new manufacturing method reduces weight and delivers on that promise. The Synapse’s handling is closer to it’s razor sharp sibling - the Super Six Evo.

As opposed to feeling like a boat.

Some of the best frames are asymmetrical. It makes sense. The load and stresses that are frame is subject to certainly are not equal. The drive side will naturally have more load than the non-drive.

A re-design of the front fork and frame has led to an increase of 9.4% at the head tube area. Thus improving the torsional (twisting) stiffness of the Synapse.

    The result?

Improved tracking through corners and overall handling.

Cannondale are one of the very few brands to introduce size-specific tune to their range.

There’s a specific carbon-laup for every frame size. As an example, someone on an XS frame isn’t going to be the same build as a rider on a XXL frame.

There’s even 3 different size head tubes and fork rakes, with the bottom of the head tube varying in size from 1.125 inches, 1.25 inches and 1.375 inches.

The Synapse Hi-Mod also benefits from Cannondale’s latest micro-suspension platform called SAVE PLUS.

Before you start rolling your eyes (like I did), stick with me because it actually makes sense.

First - what the hell is it?

It’s a series of precise tube shapes that are crafted to deflect vibrations and smooth out the road’s surface.

    SAVE PLUS has two parts:

One. The backend (rear triangle) and front fork.

Both these areas are designed to work together to help the wheels deflect and move over the road surface (independent of sitting or standing) and therefore help them deliver traction.

Two. The seatpost and seat tube.

The seat post has a tiny diameter of 25.4mm. It’s also collarless. There’s no clamp around the seat post jutting above the seat tube. His means more of that skinny post is exposed and it can therefore flex a great deal more.

And the seat tube has a unique flattened design that moves with the post - amplifying the effect.

    THE COMPONENTS

At its core is a Shimano Ultegra Di2 groupset.

It is worth noting that Cannondale have used a very broad range gear ratio; a compact crankset (50T/34T) and a wide range Shimano Ultegra cassette (11T-34T).

Intelligently, Cannondale has also used the new Shimano Ultegra Di2 RX rear derailleur:

The RX version is different to the normal version.

Because the new Synapse is an all-road machine, you’re inevitably going to come across some very bumpy roads.

To prevent the chain from bouncing around and potentially coming off altogether; the RX has a special stability unit built into the derailleur.

See the grey lever in the image above?

Yeah, flick that and it turns the stabiliser on. In fact, keep it on all the time. The only time you’ll need to turn it off is when you take the rear wheel out.

A new bar (also called part of the SAVE family) has been designed for the Synapse Hi-Mod. It’s aero and it deflects to save your hands from numbness, caused by harsh vibrations.

It looks one piece, but in fact it is a lot more practical. The stem can be unbolted from the main bar and in this way stems can be interchanged to perfect the fit.

GPS mounts are also available for your Garmin.

I love the wheels. They don’t make the Synapse Hi-Mod look cheap. And certainly no shortcuts have been taken.

The Hollowgram Knot 45’s are 45mm deep, 21mm wide (internal) and 32mm wide externally. Wheelset weight is 1,640 grams. And they are carbon.

They are also tubeless compatible. But if you’re still keen on tubes, then that isn’t an issue either.

At 45mm deep they are an excellent versatile wheelset - light enough for climbing and fast for rolling roads and the flats.
