CANNONDALE TRAIL 5 (2019)

Cannondale has been making mountain bikes since 1971. And they've always been an unconventional bike brand. Always doing stuff differently to most others.

When their stuff worked it set new benchmarks. When it didn't; well, it was a disaster.

But one thing has remained constant:

The push to drive innovation.

And the Cannondale Trail mountain bike range is no different.

In fact:

If you're searching for a new mountain to ride mountain bike trails and with the family - this has to be at the top of your shortlist.

This is why:

First, Cannondale is one of the two brands in our range (Rocky Mountain being the other) that has actually thought about the important stuff like the bike's geometry and handling (which I'll cover later on).

And second, the quality of the aluminium frame is a cut above the rest.

FRAME DESIGN

Smartform C2. That's what Cannondale calls their third-best aluminium frame and manufacturing technique.

And this is what's used on all Cannondale Trail mountain bikes.

Double-butting is a key technique used. It creates two wall thickness; thicker where there is more load (usually at the welds) and thinner where there is less load (at the centre of the tube).

Also:

Double pass welds create the strongest possible connection between each tube. For confidence, Cannondale customers receive a Lifetime Frame Warranty.

And:

There's a part of the frame that Cannondale calls flex zones. That part is the rear triangle. Its subtle up and down flex creates a kind of micro-suspension effect. Deliver a much smoother ride over rough road surfaces and harsh impact off the road.

GEOMETRY

Is not something most customers think about.

But it's actually the one thing that builds confidence and keeps you comfortable on the bike.

I'll explain:

First, the suspension fork is at a slacker angle. This places the front wheel out further in front of the rider than most of its competition.

Wheel further out, increases stability. And when stability improves - you crash less.

This is especially good news for young riders who are spending time learning mountain biking skills or adults who haven't been on a bike for a long time and are riding off-road trails.

On wheels:

The Cannondale Trail 5 rolls on 29er wheels.

Taller wheels roll over stuff easier and also deliver a smoother feel - especially over constantly bumpy surfaces.

SUSPENSION

A Rock Shox XC30 helps suspend the front of the Trail 5.

It has 100mm of travel which makes it perfect for rail trails, rough unsealed bike paths and easy mountain biking.

Adjustments include:

A blue Lockout lever. If you're riding on a road, suspension isn't required. Turning the lever clockwise turns the suspension off and makes it riigid. That means all the power you're putting into the riding is being converted into forward motion.

On the other side is a black Preload dial. Turning the dial into the ‘+' direction makes the suspension firmer for heavier riders and delivers better support.

Rock Shox products are also completely serviceable - not throwaway. This means if it doesn't feel as smooth as it used to, a simple service will solve the issue.

SHIMANO GEARS

A modern mountain bike drivetrain is used.

A single front chainring is paired to ten rear gears. This eliminates the need for a front derailleur, gear cable and shifter - significantly reducing maintenance and stuff to potentially go wrong.

Gear range is broad; from a tiny 11-tooth to a large 42-tooth sprocket. This will deliver enough range to climb steep hills and go down the other side comfortably.

Shifting is done by the new Shimano Deore rear derailleur. It's a lot more robust compared with what's available on other bikes in the same price range. It's off-road design is based on Shimano's high-end components, so it's going to be fine for those who find a love for mountain biking.

A neat stabiliser switch on the rear derailleur improves chain retention. This stops the chain from bouncing around and coming off - especially when you're mountain biking.

All this is paired to Shimano's new MT200 hydraulic disc brakes. These brakes are exceptionally reliable and deliver smooth braking power, engineered for entry level riders specifically.

If you've never been exposed to hydro brakes, there are multiple benefits:

First, as a hydraulic system there are no cables. This reduces maintenance significantly.

Second, the pressure multiplies the power at your hand multiple times. This means much less pressure is required to slow down and stop.

And lastly, for riders with small hands or short fingers, the brake lever can be adjusted so that it's closer to the handlebar.

WARRANTY

- Lifetime Frame Warranty.
- 2 years on Rock Shox and Shimano components.
- 1 year on everything else.

Cannondale Trail 5 - 2019

The 2019 Cannondale Trail 5 will "tick all the boxes" for many riders, comfortably straddling the line between high end quality and moderately priced economy. Even more so, now that it is on sale, dropping it well into the "great value for money" range.

The basis of any Bike is the frame and this is an area where Cannondale always excel and no less than expected, with this Trail 5. Lightweight, comfortable, sturdy and available in a wider range of sizes than most makes, the Cannondale Trail 5 is a Bike to suit a huge variety of riders.

Female or male, old or young, beginner, recreational or sporting riders, will enjoy many aspects of the Trail 5. For a start, a comfortable riding position which is further enhanced by RockShox suspension forks. Enjoy a feeling of total control with 760mm wide handlebars, easy to operate Shimano Deore gears, light action Shimano hydraulic disc brakes and grippy tyres from Wilderness Trail Bike.

For the price, even if you have a half decent MTB already, the Trail 5 is better value than spending a few hundred dollars on a major service.
