Giant Cross City 0 Disc 2019 To some, all flat bar road bikes must look pretty much the same. A wheel at either end, a frame in the middle and straight handlebars.
And yes, these are the basics. But it is the features that those 2 wheels possess, the quality of that frame and all of the high-end ancillary components that complete the build list, that makes the Cross City 0 far more special than the average flat-bar road bike.
Let's start with the wheels which amazingly, feature special rims which are made to accommodate tubeless tyres. For many many years, the norm on motor vehicles, in recent years on high-end Mountain Bikes, and now on road bikes, tubeless tyres have a number of advantages over their tubed siblings. The weight is reduced which aids handling and acceleration. But, for most Cross City riders, the big plus will be the fact that tyre pressure can be reduced, providing a softer more comfortable ride while also increasing traction, especially while cornering.
The Giant SX-2 heat-treated rims are super strong and when built with stainless steel spokes and quick release alloy hubs, make up a bulletproof wheelset, ideal for the rigours that commuters and tourists experience. Naturally, fitted to these wheels are tubeless tyres in a 700 x 35 size, offering the rider plenty of load-carrying capacity or shock-absorbing comfort.
The frame, which holds a lifetime warranty against material or construction defects, is made from ALUXX 6061 aluminium, selected for its extraordinary strength to weight characteristics. Shaped to further optimise strength, the result is a frame that is lightweight, extremely strong and durable and aesthetically pleasing. Coupled to the frame is a composite front fork which saves weight and increases comfort………2 very admirable traits.
The gearing on this Cross City is pretty special too. We've heard of 10-speed bikes and bikes with 18-speed gears, 21-speed gears, 24 speed and even 27 speed………….but none of this amply describes the Cross City which is a 30-speed bike. 3 chainrings upfront with 26, 36 and 48 teeth linked to a 10 speed rear cassette with cogs ranging from 11 to 34 teeth. With a full Shimano Deore gear system, shifting is effortlessly precise every time.
Shimano MT200 hydraulic disc brakes round out the major components. With minimal hand/finger pressure, safe, sure-stopping is guaranteed. Reassuring when the conditions are less than favourable.
