GIANT DEFY ADVANCED 2 (2020)
The new Giant Defy Advanced 2 (2020) is one of the most comfortable, engaging and affordable performance road bikes we have. Paired to a Shimano 105 groupset, thru-axles, wide tyres and hydraulic disc brakes, it also meets a growing need for versatility in a modern road bike.
And it’s called Advanced-grade composite. It’s a once-piece structure that delivers both a very light frame and superb stiffness.
This is important:
Lightweight is obvious.
But the reasons for stiffness are not so apparent. You don’t want the frame to flex torsionally or laterally. It wastes too much power. You fatigue quicker. Especially climbing.
So, stiffness is important for handling and power transfer.
The reason why you would want to go carbon is also the bike’s vibration damping. It’s more comfortable than an average carbon fibre frame. The frame does a brilliant job of muting harsh high-frequency impacts.
THE COMFORT AND HANDLING
For riders who have never ridden a road bike before, it can be an exhilarating experience.
But you still need to be safe.
You'll be riding at high speed a lot of the time, and as such the road bike’s stability is critical to balance this speed.
This is engineered in the different angles of the Defy Advanced’s frame. And as a beginner and even intermediate rider, this stability is what will make you enjoy riding the Defy Advanced even more.
More so than bikes like the TCR and even Propel.
Here are the key points:
Firstly, the Defy has extremely stable front-end handling. This means it’s not going to be twitchy at high-speed, it’s an easy bike to ride fast.
Second, the rear end of the Defy Advanced is a little longer. This elongates the bike and also ensures better handling on descents.
Third, the Defy has a brand new handlebar - called D-Fuse. It’s designed to work with the D-Fuse seat post. Both components are designed to flex and absorb impacts. So both together deliver a very smooth ride.
The D-Fuse handlebar is designed to flex 10% more at the hoods (brake levers/gear shifter) than a normal circular handlebar. This reduces fatigue on the hands, wrist and arms.
The new Defy Advanced 2 is built with Shimano 105 11-speed components.
105 is best described as affordable performance. It’s the third-best groupset in the range.
Although the feel isn’t quite as smooth as Ultegra, for someone who hasn’t owned a road bike before it’s still going to feel superb.
Gear shifting is almost. Almost.
This is where experienced riders or those who prefer a little more sophistication in their equipment.
And it has hydraulic disc brakes.
Compared with mechanical disc brakes there are numerous advantages:
First, much less maintenance. There’s no cables that rust or need maintenance.
Second, hydro disc brakes work in all conditions and arguable they are safer. Some examples of this; if you’re riding wet roads, are a heavier rider who does or wants to do lots of descending or just don’t want to bother with the constant maintenance of caliper brakes.
The Defy Advanced rolls on Giant’s own road wheel set. It’s called the PR-2 Disc.
These use Giant’s lighter aluminium rim and are laced to sealed bearing hubs.
They roll smoother than loose bearings. Less effort and greater reward.
They are set up tubeless.
With tubeless there is no tube. If you encounter a puncture, the liquid sealant inside the tyre will plug the puncture - as long as it’s within 3mm.
New for 2020 is the stock tyre size. It’s a 32mm wide tyre - a huge change over the 25mm wide tyres we used to see back in 2016.
The key reason is:
Air volume is larger. This means there’s more air suspending you from the road’s surface delivering a smoother ride and better comfort.
Manufacturer warranty is as follows:
On the frame, it’s a Lifetime Warranty - and only to the original owner.
On Shimano components and wheels, it’s 2 years.
And on everything else there is a 1 year warranty.

Weight - The most accurate way to determine any bike’s weight is to have your local dealer weigh it for you. Many brands strive to list the lowest possible weight, but in reality weight can vary based on size, finish, hardware and accessories. All Giant bikes are designed for best-in-class weight and ride quality.
