GIANT ROAM 1 DISC (2019)

Use; An ideal commuting bike or for general use, the Roam 1 is at home on a gravel road or bike path as it is on a sealed bitumen road. It is not suitable for more serious off-road, of course, but if you wish to use it for everyday use, it is ideal. Just drop in and try one out, you won’t be disappointed.

FRAME

All Roams use the same frame and geometry the practicality and versatility are evident in how well it rides and accommodates different terrains and surfaces. The frame is high quality, hydro-formed aluminium, which provides a reasonably light, strong, agile frame at a reasonable price.

SUSPENSION

Fitted with Suntour NCX-D LO air suspension forks, the Roam 1 provides a very comfortable ride, and with the turn of a switch, the suspension can be locked, so that the front becomes rigid, allowing a performance increase, ideal for smooth roads or steeper hills.

COMPONENTS

Most hybrid bikes used to have a triple chain-wheel at the front, with 7,8 or 9 gears at the rear. These days most have a less complex drive train, like the Roam 1. The gears are Shimano Deore which is a high-level recreational system, with a double chain-wheel at the front and 10 gears at the rear, providing smoother trouble-free gear changes with almost the same range.

Topping off the main component list are the Shimano MT200 hydraulic disc brakes, Providing great stopping power, but perhaps more importantly, consistent stopping, no matter whether it is a nice dry day on bitumen or teeming rain, out on a dirt track (subject to the tyres of course).

The cranks are a lightweight double chain-wheel unit by FSA. Having a reputation for a quality product, they are a good choice for the Roam with a 32 tooth inner ring and a 44 tooth outer ring. They assist with the smooth changing regardless of the load.

WHEELS

Fitted with simple double-wall rims, stainless steel spokes and Giant’s Sport alloy hubs. These are good quality wheels that roll well. They have proven reliable over the past few years, so you can expect excellent service from them. Tubeless tyres are great if the bike is in regular use, less so if only used occasionally, as the sealant is not being constantly re-distributed within the wheel. If only used occasionally, we can fit tubes. The tubeless set-up is designed to prevent the inconvenience of punctures when out riding. If the tyre is punctured the sealant seals the hole and you are unlikely to even be aware that the tyre was pierced.

Overall a bike that is fun to ride and comfortable, ideal for exploring Melbourne’s bike paths. As has become expected from Giant, the quality and value of the Roam 1 far exceed the price point.
