Giant Talon
Giant’s Talon family of mountain bikes are designed for recreational riders - teens, pre-teens (in the XS and SM size frames) and adults.
The family consists of 4 different models (lower number equals better model):

ALL the Talon models come in 2 wheel sizes - 27.5” and 29”. And 5 frame sizes - XS, SM, MD, LG and XL.
That’s why on our website you’ll see a “Giant Talon 27.5” and a Giant Talon 29”, just to make it easier to distinguish between both wheel sizes.
XS and SM frame sizes come with 27.5-inch wheels.
This is a great option for pre-teenage riders who are upgrading from their smaller (or much smaller!) mountain bike. The smaller size 27.5” wheels makes the Talon “feel” lighter and more nimble - more manageable for smaller riders.
SM, MD, LG and XL frame sizes come with 29-inch wheels. Note how there’s an overlap with the “SM” frame size - it comes in both wheel options.
29-inch wheels are better for adults and taller teenage riders because it’s way more ergonomic. The front of the Talon is “taller” which means tall riders aren’t hunched over like they’re riding a circus bike.

And the range starts off with the Talon 4.
This is the entry level Talon. It’s great for teens or adults who just want a recreational bike at the better end of entry-level. The Talon 4 uses mechanical disc brakes and a very reliable 8 speed gear system. Front suspension helps smooth out bumps from light dirt and gravel surfaces.
Then you move into the Talon 3. This model comes with hydraulic (or hydro for short) disc brakes and, like the Talon 4, an 8 speed gear system. Riders also get a suspension lockout; switch the suspension off for cruising on roads and make it plush for riding on gravel and dirt.
Next, is the Talon 2 and it comes with better front suspension and better gears.
Shimano’s Altus 9 speed gear system sits at the upper range of recreational. It’s very smooth shifting and super reliable.
Lastly, the Talon 1 gets better brakes, suspension and gears.
Instead of a spring, the Talon 1 uses air pressure to adjust how firm/soft the suspension needs to be. The suspension fork is also much lighter. Air forks tend to be more supple than spring forks (at this price point).
It’s also the only model to use a 1x (pronounced “1-by”) gear system. This means it has 1 front gear paired to 10 back gears. No front gears means less moving parts; equals more simplicity and robustness.
