GIANT TCR ADVANCED PRO 0 DISC (2020)

The golden-child of road groupsets for 2020 seems to be the brand new SRAM Force AXS wireless electronic. And when it’s paired to the brilliantly versatile Giant TCR Advanced frameset, it very quickly becomes a dream machine.

Here’s a preview of the model:

WHO IS IT FOR?

This level of build is perfect for the rider who has been riding for a number of years and would consider themselves an intermediate rider.

Someone who feels like they’ve reached the limits of their current bike and is ready for the next (or several) levels up.

Or:

You’re at the other end of the spectrum. It’s your first road bike, you're committed and you buy once and buy right.

THE FRAME

Giant use their Advanced-grade carbon and it’s the second-best in the range.

The front triangle is moulded from a single-piece of carbon which reduces weight and increases stiffness - dramatically. The rear triangle is also one piece (or monocoque). Both halves are then joined together.

A special resin (or glue) is used to bond the carbon sheets together. It’s a high-performance resin that Giant has developed to reduce imperfections such as voids (bubbles) and delamination.

Unlike the lower-spec TCR Advanced race bikes, the TCR Advanced Pro has some small but significant upgrades.

First, on Pro-level bikes the front fork is completely carbon. This means the fork legs (or blades) and the tube inside the frame are made from carbon, not aluminium.

Benefit:

It’s obviously much lighter, but it also delivers a stiffer front end. This improves the overall torsional rigidity of the TCR Advanced Pro frame set. This improves the TCR’s handling drastically.

Second, the TCR Advanced Pro frame has a larger top bearing; 1.25-inches instead of 1.125-inches. This increases the stiffness around the head tube, top tube and down tube intersection by 7%.

THE BUILD

By the standout feature of the TCR Advanced Pro 0 Disc is the brand new SRAM Force AXS wireless electronic groupset.

Force AXS is at the cutting edge of the new breed of 12-speed groupsets (Shimano is still 11-speed).

There’s no mechanical version only electronic.

Everything has been redesigned to deliver smoother gear shifts, better pedalling efficiency and much longer durability.

Here are the key benefits:

First, it’s wireless. This means there are no internally routed cables, or cables that can be pinched or damaged. This ecosystem is super clean.

Second, a 12 speed drive system delivers a broader range (called X Range, see graph below) than 11 speed. You have more top end speed and an easier climbing gear.

Third, there are more 1-tooth jumps. 11-speed sprockets don’t have a chance. This is important because it allows you to maintain a better pedalling cadence (or rotational speed) and not feel like there’s a massive gap between each gear.

Fourth, the new 12-speed chain is quieter, more durable and looks unique with its distinct flat top profile.

Fifth, the rear derailleur features a new tech called Orbit. This is a special fluid filled clutch. It’s been designed to stabilise the rear derailleur and this inturn helps to quieten road noise.

There’s a battery for the rear derailleur, front derailleur, and both gear shifters. Gear shifter batteries last for approximately 10 months and the derailleur batteries are both rechargeable.

And they are interchangeable. If the rear derailleur battery goes flat, then you’re able to switch it with the front derailleur’s battery.

The TCR Advanced Pro 0 Disc rolls on Giant’s new SLR 1 carbon disc wheelset. The rims have been updated to deliver better aerodynamics. They’ve also been widened; this also widens the tyre and allows more air volume inside.

More air volume cushions you against rough road surfaces and enhances comfort.

Moreover, the tyres are set up tubeless.

Tubeless has other benefits:

First, there’s lower rolling resistance. You move faster with less effort.

Second, it's more comfortable. There’s no tube inside the tyre, so the tyre can move freely and absorb road vibrations.

The rims are laced to Giant hubs. And these are made with internals from DT Swiss - one of the best hub and wheel manufacturers in the world.

WARRANTY

The TCR Advanced Pro 0 Disc’s frame comes with a Lifetime Warranty. On all SRAM components and Giant wheels there are 2 years and 1 year on everything else.
