The Giant TCR Advanced Pro 2 Disc (2020) is the most well rounded road bike in Giant’s range. It’s the bike you reach for when you don’t want the bike to limit where you ride and, indeed, how you ride.

In this preview, I’ll explain who will benefit from buying the TCR Advanced Pro 2 Disc and discuss its build.

It’s for the rider who is upgrading from an older aluminum Giant Defy or other road bike. Perhaps that bike is running a Shimano Tiagra or 105 drive train (or less) and still uses caliper brakes and basic aluminium wheels.

You’ve noticed recently that the bike feels sluggish, the brakes and gears don’t work as well as they used to either.

This is your first road bike. And you’re committed, so you’re willing to spend a little extra to get stuff you won’t need to upgrade in the future.

The TCR Advanced Pro is the second-best frame set in the range. The level higher is called the TCR Advanced SL, and it’s the frame Giant’s pro team (CCC) race with.

For the semi-serious recreational rider, the TCR Advanced Pro is more than OK.

The front triangle is mouled as a single piece (monocoque). And so is the rear half of the Pro 2 Disc. Both halves are then joined together.

This minimises the need for several joins ; reducing weight and increasing frame stiffness where it’s needed.

Giant call this a modified-monocoque approach.

The front and rear wheels are attached using thru-axles.

Instead of a normal quick-release skewer.

Here’s why:

A thru-axle has a much larger diameter than a standard quick-release. This extra stiffness clamps the front and rear wheels into the frame better.

This has the effect of increasing the torsional or twisting resistance of the bike.

And this therefore improves the TCR Pro 2 Disc’s handling; especially through corners, tracking like it’s glued to the road surface.

The TCR Advanced Pro 2 Disc represents perhaps the best value for money road bike in the 2020 range.

The TCR’s brilliant carbon frame is complemented by a complete Shimano Ultegra groupset and Giant carbon wheels.

For those not in the know, Shimano Ultegra sits one down from the top - Dura Ace.

To be honest:

This latest generation Ultegra is so good, you really don’t need to have Dura Ace. Ultegra uses the same tech, the only difference is weight - Ultegra weighs 250 grams more.

Some of the the latest updates include:

One, a new four arm asymmetric crankset with wider arms that delivers better power transfer.

Two, updated hydraulic disc brakes including rotors. These dissipate heat faster and deliver better stopping power - especially on long descents.

Three, hood design has been revamped to deliver better comfort on long rides and reduces hand pressure.

Four, the rear derailleur is the new Shadow design. It sits tucked into the frame to minimise damage.

Now the wheels:

If you’ve never ridden carbon wheels, the first thing you’ll notice is how easy it is to go fast.

These wheels are 42mm deep, they used to be 30mm deep. Giant has made them slightly more aero by increasing their depth. It has also made them stiffer, resulting in better power transfer.

But it’s not just the depth.

Giant has also revised the rim profile. It’s better in crosswinds. And the rim is wider too. As road tyres are getting wider (the normal was 23mm wide but is now 25 to 28mm wide). A wider rim allows more air volume inside the tyre. More air equals more comfort.

The rims are laced to hubs made by DT Swiss. These hubs roll on sealed bearings. So they don’t need constant maintenance and attention.

Giant delivers a LIfetime Frame Warranty, 2 years on Shimano components and Giant carbon wheels and 1 year on everything else.
