    PRODUCT DETAILS

MALVERN STAR FREEDOM M2 (2022) - MATTE BLACK

The Freedom M2 is the highest-level sports hybrid in Malvern Star’s range. It’s well spec’d without costing the Earth. In fact, we’d go as far as saying it’s one of our best value hybrids.

    WHO IS IT FOR?

The M2 is a sports hybrid. It’s designed to be versatile - a jack of all trades. It is built for riders who want a general fitness, commuting and even basic touring bike.

As such it can easily accommodate riding on bike paths and rail trails. Mountain biking or heavy off-road is out of the question though. You’ll need to look at a mountain bike for this type of riding.

The M2 would be perfect for those who want the best sports hybrid they can get under $1,000.00; well built without going over the top on budget.

    THE FRAME AND ERGONOMICS

Other than it still being made from aluminium, this latest generation Freedom frame has zero similarity to the legacy model.

The new M2 has a far more sophisticated aluminium frame. In order to save weight (and increase rigidity), engineers have completely reshaped how each tube looks. It’s modern and light.

Cables route internally to further improve how clean the frame looks.

As a hybrid, the Freedom M2 is designed to be relaxed and comfortable. The taller handlebar height places less pressure on the hands and delivers a more upright seated riding position. The reach is also a bit shorter - 5mm shorter - than the equivalent Giant Roam.

    THE COMPONENTS

The Freedom M1 and M2 share the same suspension fork. 65mm of travel and a lockout ensure it’s going to be suitable for a variety of trails and bike paths.

Where we have differences is in the gears and brakes.

There are 18 gears on the M2; 9 gears on the back and 2 gears on the front.

9 speed drivetrains are at the upper end of the recreational range. Compared to 8 and 7 speed systems, these shift smoother and deliver a broader range. In other words, you can go faster and climb hills easier.

    Components of choice are microSHIFT.

With Shimano not being able to supply components for many brands, the situation has allowed smaller respectable manufacturers to flourish - the underdogs who couldn’t compete with Shimano domination.

And microSHIFT has done just that.

Marvo components are used throughout the M1 build. These are microSHIFT’s upper-end recreational components. Designed for those who like a set and forget mentality - it’ll just work when you want to go for a bike ride.

Further the gears have been simplified and made a little more efficient. Instead of 3 front gears, there are 2. More rear gears can pair with each front chain ring. This reduces gear overlap as well as using the same gear ratio multiple times.

Hydraulic disc brakes are the second type of disc brake (the other being mechanical, which is used on the M2).

Hydro brakes require a lot less effort to slow down and control your speed. The lever pull is lighter too; you’re not having to fight the friction in the cable to pull the lever towards the handlebar, so they have a smoother “feel” about them.

Like the Freedom M1, the M2 uses strong double-wall aluminum rims. Plus, rack and mudguard mounts on the frame will appeal to those serious about commuting and touring.
