MALVERN STAR OPPY A2

The Malvern Star Oppy A2 is perfect for the amateur road rider, the rider who wants a robust and inexpensive commuting or general fitness road bike or those who need a bike to wear out on one the new generation Smart Trainers.

There’s nothing super fancy about the Oppy. But then it doesn’t need to be. The frame is made from aluminium. It’s hydroformed to save weight but besides that it’s intention is to be durable and robust.

And it ticks the basics.

An internally routed rear brake cable keeps appearances clean. Both derailleur cables are externally routed to make maintenance easier. And a tapered head tube helps stiffen the frame for better power transfer to the road.

The Oppy’s fork blades are made from carbon-fibre too. It helps shed weight, but more importantly it acts as a vibration dampener to deliver a smoother ride.

Speaking of comfort, the Oppy also comes standard with 25mm wide tyres. Days of 23mm wide tyres are gone for good. The wider tyre not only delivers more comfort, it also reduces rolling resistance, helping you go faster with less effort.

No wonder, 23mm tyres have died out.

No, it’s not a fancy-pants Shimano Ultegra or Dura-Ace, but Sora does the job very well. It’s reliable, robust, cheap to replace and works flawlessly. Traits that are important if you’re going to be relying on this bike for commuting or Smart Trainer workouts.

There are 2 front gears and 9 rear gears. The gear ratios are wide-range. This means it’s a LOT easier to climb hills and suited to riders who are not cycling-fit.

The other stand out feature is that the Malvern Star Oppy A2’s drivetrain is ALL Shimano Sora. Even the wheel hubs. Everything is of the same brand AND family and therefore works together flawlessly.

No corners cut. No non-Shimano parts. No downgrades.

Thus, the Oppy A2 represents excellent value and a great investment.
