XDS E-EXPRESS

The XDS E-Express is a hybrid e-bike that is designed for general fitness rides, commuting and leisure rides. It’s perfect for rail trails, bike paths and inner-city roads and lanes.

Almost all the major components are made from aluminium, including the frame, wheels, handlebars and front fork legs. So weight has been removed from many places to improve handling and battery life.

The E-Express has a sport (but comfortable) riding position. This is to ensure the bike’s handling is on the quicker side. E-bikes are generally heavier, so the quicker handling helps balance it out.

For commuting, the E-Express comes with mudguards and it’s worth noting that the cabling is routed internally, minimising maintenance and protecting the wiring.

Hydraulic disc brakes (front and rear) also help stop the E-Express. And are a must on any e-bike. The extra weight of the e-bike needs greater stopping power to decelerate. With hydro brakes, the E-Express stops quicker and with much less hand effort. A blessing for constant on and off braking - especially in traffic.

The E-Express is a little different to the other XDS e-bikes in it’s gearing. It uses an internal hub drive gear system called Shimano Nexus (a total of 8 gears).

The main advantage of internal gears is the lack of maintenance. There are no derailleurs or multiple exposed sprockets which attract grit, dust and mud. No derailleur means little to no adjustment of the derailleur is required.

Gear shifts are also smoother than external gears. And you don’t need to pedal forward for the gear to engage. Once it clicks into gear 3, it engages immediately.

One example of where this feature is useful is: if you’ve stopped at a traffic light in top (hardest) gear and you need to start pedalling up a hill. Very hard on a traditional drive system, especially if you have to shift up or 5 gears to get into a comfortable gear. Not with internal.

There are two sizes in the E-Express; 53cm and 56cm (medium and large).

MID-DRIVE

It’s worth mentioning that the E-Express uses a mid-drive mounting system and has numerous advantages.

First, the motor is placed in a neutral position and at the lowest position. This reduces the centre of gravity and improves handling - far better than a rear hub or front hub driven system.

Second, mid-drive systems are more powerful and more efficient compared to their hub driven counterparts.

THE ELECTRONICS

At the heart of the E-Express is the new Shimano Steps E6000 trekking components.

The LCD display is super easy to read and has all the functions of a standard bike computer. Additionally, it shows the range and battery level.

Shimano developed the drive unit (motor) to be quiet, smooth and powerful enough for commuting and general fitness rides. Maximum torque is at 50Nm - more than enough for its intended use.

The battery is downtube mounted (and weight 2.66kg). And has a capacity of 418Wh. Certainly not the least and not as high as the Giant Explore E+. It’s a good average capacity.

Shimano has also tested it for 1,000 charge cycles (0% to 100%) without major loss in power. And the new charger is faster; getting you to 80% in 2 hours and 100% in 4 hours.
