The new Legion L80 is designed for intermediate riders, or beginners who want a BMX they can progress with. With a 20.75-inch top tube, it’s ideally suited to riders from 165cm to 180cm. But do take this as an approximate, not a definite guide.
The Legion L80 is also the first model to come built with some 4130 Chromoly in the frame. The front half of the L80 (called the front triangle) is made from Chromoly and the rear half from high-tensile steel.
Mongoose do this to make accessing 4130 easier because frames made from this material do ride nicer.
The main reason is that 4130 frames tend to “flex” easier. This means absorbing landings (especially at concrete skate parks) become more muted and forgiving on the rider.
Other benefits include better corrosion resistance and slightly lighter weight. The tri-moly frame is paired to a high-tensile steel fork and steerer tube.
And, as expected, the bars (compared to L60) are 0.25 inches taller, in keeping with the longer 0.25 inch frame.
Another key feature of the L80’s frame is the integrated bearing headtube. The big deal here is that the bearings sit directly inside the L80’s frame (and not on top), so they have a stronger “connection”; so better load distribution and the bearings tend to be of a higher quality too.
Like the Legion L60 below, the L80 also uses a mid-sealed bottom bracket. These robust bearings are sealed from the elements and will last a lot longer compared to a non-sealed type (such as the Legion L10 and L20).
Wide 29mm rims are paired to 2.30-inch wide tyres to absorb hard impacts and strengthen the wheel itself.
