THE TYPE OF BIKE

The most common type of bike we sell to teens are recreational mountain bikes.

The other option is a hybrid.

Both of these bikes are great for general fitness, plus riding with family and friends.

They’re also terrain versatile; they can cope with smooth dirt and gravel paths, as well as suburban bike paths.

The main difference between these 2 bikes is the tyres.

The recreational mountain bike has wider tyres (at least 50mm wide); perfect for riders who are spending time on dirt or gravel surface or who just want more grip.

Recreational mountain bikes tend to be a little tougher too.

But for teens who prefer something a little faster and easier to ride, the hybrid is the way to go. These bikes have narrower tyres (40-45mm wide) and so there’s less rolling resistance.

Some examples of great value mountain bikes for teens:
* Haro Double Peak range
* Giant Talon range
* XDS Boss 3.0

And for girls:
* Liv Tempt range
* Our complete women’s mountain bike range

And our hybrid bikes:
* For teenage boys, checkout out the XDS Venture, Giant Roam or Malvern Star Freedom M1 here
* For teenage girls, have a squiz at the hybrid range here

FUTURE GROWTH

It doesn’t matter what type of bike you get because almost all bikes are available in different frame sizes.

And to handle future growth, most of the time we place teenagers on a frame size where they are at the bottom of the height range for that size.

9 times out of 10, this means we use XS, S, M and even L adult frame sizes for teens and “shrink” the bike down.

This will mean the seat is close to its lowest position. But that’s good. The more we raise the seat post up, there’s less room to “grow into” that frame size.

And some other adjustments:

To make riders feel more confident, we can slide the seat forward; reducing the distance to the handlebars.

Brake levers can also be positioned closer to the handlebars, so riders have more control when they want to stop.
