Recreation, Urban & Commuter Bikes

Mountain bikes and road bikes are vastly different, and therefore easily identifable. However what about those bikes that fall somewhere in between? Well, there are many names for these kind of bikes, and many sub-classes within them.

The first and most popular is a hybrid bike. Hybrid bikes feature the best of road bikes and mountain bikes to create an amazing riding experience across different terrains. These hybrid bikes combine the effortless, fast ride of road bikes with the comfort and stability of mountain bikes. Hybrid bikes most commonly have flat handlebars, front suspension, and wide 700c tyres that are wider than a road bike to better suit changing terrain. Hybrid bikes also often have a wide gear range, with multiple gears at the front and rear so you can comfortably tackle hills and flats.

Hybrid bikes are very popular with commuters and weekend riders just looking to explore the neighbourhood. They travel well on grass, bitumen and gravel. We stock some of the best brands like Giant, Cannondale, XDS and many more.

Another hugely popular commuting bike is the Flat Bar Road Bike. These bikes are, like you’d guess, a road bike with flat handlebars and a more comfortable upright positioning than a drop bar road bike. They have rigid front forks and 700c tyres. They’re best suited to smooth paved roads and bike paths. Flat Bar Road Bikes are a very popular choice for fitness riders who prefer the positioning of a flat bar, but still want to achieve speed.

You might also hear the terms “City Bike” or “Urban Bike”. A lot of flat bar road bikes come under this heading, but these refer to bikes best suited to flat, smooth terrain. These bikes typically have a smaller gear range, including single-speed or “fixie bikes”. They’re also often equipped with a wide comfortable seat, and have a very relaxed, upright positioning. If you don’t find yourself tackling any steep hills and tend to stick to sealed paths, a city bike will be a great choice.

Cruiser Bikes, and Retro Bikes, also get a special mention here. These bikes have two things in mind: style and comfort. These bikes have a smaller gear range and find their home on flat, sealed bike paths. These bikes often have a low step-through frame design, and a big comfortable seat.
