WHO IT’S FOR
It’s not the bike you’d pick for rugged mountain bike trails - especially if you’re riding these trails consistently - but everything else, it can handle without issue.
The Talon 3 will suit riders who are searching for a mid-range do-it-all mountain bike that can handle a range of terrain. And are NOT going to be riding mountain bike trails consistently.
Because the Talon 3 comes in a range of frame sizes (from S to XL), we find that when we’re sizing up in-store that the sizing suits riders of all ages; pre-teens, teenagers and adults.
Mountain bike trails can be super hard on the Talon 3’s components. For this reason, a better long term investment will be the Giant Talon 1 2024 or the Haro Double Peak Comp.
You may need to keep saving, but it’ll be worth it.
THE COMPONENTS
Like all of Giant’s bikes, the Talon 3’s frame is very well designed. It features modern tube shapes to keep weight down.
Most of the cables run inside the frame. This keeps dirt out of the gear cables, meaning less maintenance. It also makes the Talon look much neater.
The Talon 3 uses hydraulic disc brakes - one key upgrade from the Talon 4. Hydro brakes need less maintenance and work much better in dry and wet conditions. We also find they are better suited to young riders who are still developing their hand strength (because the hydro levers require less effort to operate).
An 8 speed Shimano/microSHIFT gear system delivers an excellent mid-range setup. It’s an 8 speed gear system (versus the Talon 4’s 7 speed), so it’ll deliver smoother gear changes. Because we’re upgrading from 7 to 8 gears, all the components that make up the gearing system (derailleurs, gear shifters, cranks…) also get upgraded.
