Each drivetrain speed uses different sprocket spacing, so mixing components can result in poor shifting performance.

Choosing the Right Gear Range

10 speed cassettes are available in various tooth ranges depending on riding style.

  • Smaller ranges (e.g. 11–28T) provide tight gear steps for road bikes and flatter roads.
  • Wider ranges (e.g. 11–36T) make climbing easier and are common on mountain bikes.

However, if you run a single front chainring, then you'll need a much wider range (such as 11-48T). This is common on mountain bikes and, now, on lifestyle/commuter bikes like the Giant Roam and Giant Fastroad.

Selecting the correct range depends on how steep your terrain is, fitness and rear derailleur compatibility.
