11 Speed Chain Compatibility
11-speed bike chains must be used with 11-speed drivetrains.
This includes the 11 speed cassette, shifter and derailleurs. Each speed uses different spacing between gears, so using the wrong chain can result in poor shifting.
Most 11-speed systems use similar spacing.
Which means Shimano, SRAM, KMC and YBN chains are generally cross-compatible.
However, different brands can offer slightly different performance characteristics.
- Shimano chains are known for smooth and consistent shifting.
- SRAM chains are often chosen for durability and strength.
- KMC chains offer a balance of performance and value. However their high-end chains with their DLC coatings
- YBN chains are generally the fastest. These are popular for their low friction coatings and long wear life.
While many combinations will work, matching your chain to your drivetrain brand typically delivers the best overall performance.
Shimano vs SRAM 11 Speed Chains
Shimano and SRAM 11-speed chains use slightly different designs, but they are generally compatible across most drivetrains.
- Shimano chains are known for smooth shifting and quiet performance.
- SRAM chains often prioritise durability and strength.
Choosing between them often comes down to rider preference, budget and drivetrain setup.
Shimano has 3 levels of 11-speed chains:
- The CN-HG601-11 is the base version.
- Moving up to the CN-HG701-11 the chain gets Shimano's high-tec SIL-TEC surface treatment on the inner and outer plate. SIL-TEC reduces friction and increases durability.
- The top-end CN-HG901-11 gets SIL-TEC chain rollers in additon to the inner and out plates.
Popular 11 Speed Chains
Our range of 11 speed bike chains covers road bikes, mountain bikes, gravel and e-bikes. Whether you're replacing a worn chain or upgrading your drivetrain, there are options available for different riding styles and budgets.
Shimano 11 Speed Chains
Shimano chains are known for durability and smooth shifting. Many models use SIL-TEC, a high-tec low-friction coating that improves efficiency and wear life.
Shimano has 3 levels of 11-speed chains:
- The CN-HG601-11 is the base version. It's reliable and cost-effective for everyday riding.
- Moving up to the CN-HG701-11 the chain gets Shimano's high-tec SIL-TEC surface treatment on the inner and outer plate. Offering a balance of performance and durability for road, MTB and gravel.
- The top-end CN-HG901-11 gets SIL-TEC chain rollers in additon to the inner and out plates. It delivers lightweight, premium performance with enhanced coating coverage.
SRAM 11 Speed Chains
SRAM offers a range of chains suited to both road and mountain bike drivetrains.
- PC-1130: Durable and affordable for everyday use
- X1: Built for MTB riders needing strength and reliability
- Force PC-1170: Smooth, performance-focused chain for road cycling
- Red 22: Lightweight, premium option for high-performance setups
Choosing the Right 11 Speed Chain
When selecting a chain:
- Match your chain to your 11 speed cassette.
- Consider your drivetrain brand (Shimano, SRAM) and whether you'd like a faster chain (such as YBN).
Using the correct chain improves shifting performance and helps extend the life of your drivetrain.
When Should You Replace an 11 Speed Chain?
Chains wear over time and should be replaced before they damage other drivetrain components.
Common signs of wear include:
- Skipping under power
- Noisy drivetrain
- Inconsistent shifting
Replacing your chain early helps protect your bike cassette and chainrings. If you leave it too long, the chain starts to wear out the cassette and chainrings.
