11-speed bike chains must be used with 11-speed drivetrains.

This includes the 11 speed cassette, shifter and derailleurs. Each speed uses different spacing between gears, so using the wrong chain can result in poor shifting.

Shimano and SRAM 11-speed chains use slightly different designs, but they are generally compatible across most drivetrains.

Shimano has 3 levels of 11-speed chains:

• The CN-HG601-11 is the base version.
• Moving up to the CN-HG701-11 the chain gets Shimano's high-tec SIL-TEC surface treatment on the inner and outer plate. SIL-TEC reduces friction and increases durability.
• The top-end CN-HG901-11 gets SIL-TEC chain rollers in additon to the inner and out plates.
