What are 24-inch bikes?

A 24-inch bike refers to a kids bike with 24-inch wheels, which is typically designed for riders from 7 years old.

24-inch bikes commonly have multiple gears and hand brakes. Very few models have foot brakes at this size.

It's also worth noting that:

24-inch is the diameter of the wheels. The frame size will be different between brands.

Therefore, slightly taller riders will benefit from a larger 24-inch bike because there's more growth available.

Types of 24-inch bikes

24-inch bikes come in several types:

Mountain Bikes (MTBs) have front suspension, treaded tyres and multiple gears. We call them MTBs, but really, they are easy to ride, versatile all-round bikes.

Street bikes don't have suspension which makes them a little bit lighter. Tyres are narrow and suited for sealed paths only.

And then there’s something in between these two, a Cross-Over option.

24-inch bikes: Mountain Bikes

Our 24-inch kids mountain bike range consists of the following popular options:

The Mongoose Rockadile 24-inch bikes above are highlighted for taller riders.

The Giant, Liv and Haro all have lower frames that are better suited for short to average sized riders.

And for kids who are the bottom end of the 24-inch range, giving them access to the larger frame size.

For serious mountain bikers, we have the Giant Faith 24 and Liv Faith 24 dual-suspension mountain bikes.

24-inch Street

These bikes don’t have suspension because it helps reduce weight. After all, suspension is one of the heavier components on any bike.

Parents should consider a lightweight option if the majority of riding is going to be on smooth pavement with minimal impacts.

Some options in our range include:

The lightweight version of ByK’s E540 comes in a few variations (9-speed and 3-speed).

The Liv and Giant Street versions have 3-gears and a footbrake.

These are great options if you’re young rider still heavily relies on using their feet to slow down.

24-inch bikes: The Cross-Over SUV option

These 24-inch bikes don't have suspension and are focused on weight reduction. Just like the mountain bikes above, there's a lot of variation in frame sizes and the style.

Here are some options we've picked out:

The Haro Beasley 24 is one of our favourites.

Almost everything on it is made from aluminium, so it's very lightweight.

Beasley’s get wider tyres, like the mountain bikes. These tyres have more air volume and act as micro-suspension.

And kids find the gears very easy to use.

The Jamis XR24 is another great option. It's slightly cheaper than the Beasley 24 because it doesn't have disc brakes.

Spanish brand Orbea have designed the Laufey 24 to deliver confidence to young riders. It's one of the calmest and most stable handling Urban bikes in our range.
