Are kids bike helmets required by law?
Yes. Children must wear an approved bicycle helmet when riding in every Australian state and territory.
Since 2024, helmets sold in Australia can be certified to any of six accepted safety standards: AS/NZS 2063 (2008 and 2020 versions), EN 1078 from Europe, CPSC 16 CFR 1203 from the United States, ASTM F1447-18 and Snell B-95.
You'll find the certification label inside the shell, and it's the quickest way to confirm a helmet is legal to ride in. Many full face kids helmets for BMX and mountain biking carry a US certification rather than AS/NZS 2063. That is fully legal here, as long as it's one of the six.
How to measure your child's head
Wrap a soft tape measure around your child's head about 2cm above the eyebrows, keeping it level and just above the ears. Use that number in centimetres to choose a size. Every product page lists the helmet's fit range.
Our smallest kids helmets start at 44cm, and youth sizes generally top out around 57cm. Many teens outgrow youth sizes before they finish high school. If your child measures above 57cm, adult small helmets in our bike helmets range are the next step. Head size varies more than age does, so always measure rather than buying by age alone.
How should a kids helmet fit?
Level, not tilted back. The front edge should sit about two fingers' width above the eyebrows.
Straps in a V. The side straps should meet just below each earlobe.
Chin strap snug. You should fit one finger between the strap and the chin, and no more.
No wobble. Tighten the rear dial until the helmet stays put when your child shakes their head.
Check the fit every few months as your child grows. Every helmet we sell is fitted and sized to your child at the time of purchase.
Kids MTB helmets
Keep your young rider safe on every trail with our range of kids MTB helmets.
Designed specifically for mountain biking, these helmets combine robust impact protection, extended coverage. Especially on the back and sides of the head.
Our kids MTB helmets feature adjustable fit, ample ventilation and youth-specific designs to ensure a secure and comfortable fit for growing riders.
Open face kids MTB helmets have more vents and a visor, built for children riding mountain bike trails. Many include Mips. Older riders can move up to our MTB helmets.
Full face kids MTB helmets add a chin bar for bike parks, downhill and BMX racing. AusCycling requires a full face helmet with a fixed mouthpiece for sanctioned BMX racing. See our full face helmets and BMX helmets.
Toddler bike helmets
Toddler helmets are built for small heads, with extended coverage at the back and usually a built-in visor.
They suit balance bikes, trikes, scooters and a first pedal bike.
Some models add a built-in rear light. For riding around town and at skate parks, a skate-style hardshell helmet with a round, low-profile shell is another option.
What is Mips, and does my child need it?
Mips is a low-friction layer inside the helmet.
It is designed to reduce rotational forces in some angled impacts. It isn't required by law: every certified helmet passes impact testing without it.
Our kids range includes Mips models from Giro, Bell and Fox. Lazer uses its own rotational system called KinetiCore.
Our helmet technology guide explains how these systems work.
Kids and youth helmets from Giro, Fox, Kali and more
Giro youth helmets run from the Scamp for toddlers and young kids, through the Tremor, to the Fixture for older kids. Mips versions are available across the range.
Fox youth helmets are built for mountain biking. The Speedframe is an open face trail helmet, while the Rampage and Proframe are full face helmets for bike parks and downhill.
Kali covers toddlers to tweens with the Chakra Child and Chakra Youth. Some Chakra models add a built-in LED light.
Bell, ABUS and Lazer round out the open face range, with helmets like the Bell 2Twenty Youth, the ABUS Smiley for toddlers and the Lazer J1.
We also stock Azur, Leatt, ByK and Protec. All three of our Melbourne stores carry the same brands, and each product page shows live stock by store.
When should you replace a kids helmet?
Replace a helmet after any crash where it took an impact, even if you can't see damage. The foam liner is designed to compress once.
Also replace it if:
- the shell is cracked
- the foam is dented
- the straps are frayed
- your child has outgrown it (the rear dial is fully open and the helmet still sits high)

Only if it is certified to one of the six standards accepted in Australia:
AS/NZS 2063, EN 1078, CPSC 16 CFR 1203, ASTM F1447-18 or Snell B-95. Check the label inside the shell.
Is a Mips kids helmet worth it?
Is a Mips kids helmet worth it?
Mips adds protection against rotational forces in some angled impacts, so it's worth considering for kids riding trails or at speed. A certified helmet without Mips still meets Australian legal requirements.
Should my toddler wear a helmet on a balance bike?
Should my toddler wear a helmet on a balance bike?
We recommend it. Balance bike riders fall often while learning, and wearing a helmet from the first ride builds the habit early.
