26-inch bikes are the transition bike between kids/youth bikes and adult bikes.
These are a great option for riders who are taller than average 8 year olds. Where the 24-inch bike won't last as long but a full adult bike is too big.
There are 4 options in this size range that we stock.
And we'll go through what they are next.
The Mountain Bike (MTB). It's all about versatility.
Not only are they fine for suburban bike paths, they are designed to offer stable, safe handling over rough terrain. It makes 26-inch MTBs an ideal fit for kids who are…adventurous?
These bikes will have front suspension and wider tyres to absorb impacts and deliver better off-road grip.
Some examples are the Cannondale Trail 26, Giant STP (more off-road) and then the Giant Faith which is designed for serious mountain biking.
Lightweight.
No suspension. Narrow tyres. Lightweight frame tubing.
This type of 26-inch bike is all about reducing weight and the effort to pedal.
These are designed for paved suburban bike paths. They can handle very light, smooth unsealed surfaces too.
Examples include the ByK E620.
The Cross-over.
As long as there's no rough off-road involved, these 26-inch bikes are going to be really good at everything else.
No suspension and mostly aluminium parts means these bikes are light.
What makes them smoother and more versatile than the Lightweights above is the tyres.
Wider tyres have more air volume.
This allows the tyres to behave like micro-suspension; absorbing chattery impacts, delivering more grip and stability.
Our favourite is the Haro Beasley 26.
Another option is ByK's E620 MTR (Mountain Road) 7-speed and E620 MTR 3-speed.
ByK love making lightweight bikes so these bikes have that DNA but the wider tyres give them versatility.
