MTB & Gravel Dropper Seatposts

What is a Dropper Post?

A dropper post is an adjustable seatpost that allows you to change saddle height on the fly using a handlebar-mounted lever.

Inside the post is a mechanical or hydraulic system that locks the saddle at different heights, giving you control over your riding position.

• Raise the saddle for efficient pedalling on climbs
• Lower the saddle for better control on descents

Dropper posts are now considered essential for trail and enduro riding, and are increasingly used on gravel and e-bikes.

Why Use a Dropper Post?

Better Control on Descents

Lowering the saddle gives you more space to move and shift your weight, improving stability on technical terrain.

Improved Climbing Efficiency

Raise the saddle instantly to maintain proper pedalling position on climbs.

More Confidence on Technical Terrain

Dropper posts allow you to ride more aggressively by keeping your centre of gravity lower when needed.

Seamless On-the-Fly Adjustment

Operate the post via a handlebar lever without stopping or interrupting your ride.

What Size Dropper Post Do I Need?

Choosing the correct dropper post size depends on your bike and riding style.

The key factors are:

• Seatpost diameter (27.2mm, 30.9mm, 31.6mm, 34.9mm)
• Travel length (how far the saddle drops)
• Frame compatibility (internal or external routing)

Most mountain bikes use 30.9mm or 31.6mm dropper posts, while gravel bikes typically use 27.2mm dropper posts.

Seatpost Diameter

Dropper posts must match your frame:

• Common sizes: 27.2mm, 30.9mm, 31.6mm, 34.9mm

Always check your current seatpost or frame specifications before buying.

Actuation Type

• Mechanical (cable) are affordable and easy to service.
• Hydraulic deliver very smooth operation and a sealed system for less maintainence.
• Electronic dropper posts are wireless and deliver premium performance. No cables means much less maintenance too.

Internal vs External Dropper Posts

Dropper posts are available with two cable routing options:

• Internally routed cable runs inside the frame for a clean look. Mountain bikes that run internal cable routing are very common now.
• Externally routed dropper posts has the cable on the outside the frame. These are used on veyr old mountain bikes. Or bikes that have the cable running on the outside of the frame.

Your frame will determine which option is compatible.

Choosing the Right Dropper Post

When selecting a dropper post, consider:

• Your riding style (XC, Trail, Enduro, Gravel).
• Required travel length.
• Seatpost diameter compatibility (very important).
• Cable routing options on your frame.

Choosing the correct dropper post improves comfort, control and overall riding performance.

Who Should Use a Dropper Post?

Dropper posts are ideal for:

• Mountain bikers (trail, enduro, XC).
• Gravel riders tackling technical terrain.
• E-bike riders seeking more control.
• Riders with limited mobility who benefit from adjustable saddle height.
