MTB Shoes

(48 products)

Our collection of mountain bike shoes below includes Shimano mountain bike shoes, Fox Union MTB shoes and other brands.

All of these shoes will have a 2-bolt cleat and they'll be compatible with any brand of mountain bike pedal.

Just note that the shoes don't come with cleats but the pedals do. So if you're buying shoes only, you'll need to buy cleats too or take them off your old pair of shoes.

What are MTB shoes?

MTB shoes (mountain bike shoes) are specially designed cycling shoes made for riding off-road — on trails, gravel, or rugged terrain.

They’re built to work with flat or clipless mountain bike pedals and help riders transfer power efficiently while giving them the grip, protection, and comfort they need when riding and walking on varied surfaces.

Unlike road cycling shoes, which usually have smooth, stiff soles made just for pedalling, MTB shoes have tougher, more flexible outsoles with aggressive tread patterns for better traction when you need to walk or hike over rocks, mud, or roots.

Many also include reinforced toe boxes or protective panels to guard against impacts.

Clipless MTB shoes have special cleats on the sole that attach to clipless pedals (like SPD pedals) for a secure connection, while flat pedal shoes use sticky rubber soles that grip the pedal’s pins without clipping in — giving riders freedom to put a foot down quickly in technical terrain.

In short, mountain bike shoes combine efficient power transfer, rugged grip, and durability, making them an essential bit of gear for anyone who rides trails, gravel roads, or adventure routes.

Shimano MTB shoes

These shoes will always be labelled as SPD. Shimano Pedalling Dynamics.

So, when you see the SPD logo these are: MTB shoes, indoor cycling shoes and gravel shoes.

Shimano mountain bike shoes have 2 letters that indicate what that shoe range is designed for.

Example:

The letters XC indicate this shoe range is designed for cross-country mountain biking.

These shoes have a stiff undersole (for max power transfer) and a focus on reducing weight.

The number after the XC indicates the model.

So the Shimano XC1 is the entry point in the XC range. Then it's the XC3, XC5, XC7 and XC9 (the best).

Next, we've got the GE (gravity enduro) range.

These MTB shoes are designed for much more rugged terrain and riding. So they're great for DH, Enduro and heavy-duty trail riding.

These shoes are heavier, with a broader toe box and wider profile.

GE MTB shoes have more flex in the soles; delivering more control on technical descents.

Where Shimano GE shoes are a SPD shoe designed to be clipped into a pedal, the GF range is not.

GF stands for Gravity Flat. And these MTB shoes are designed to pair with proper flat pedals.

Shimano XC3 MTB Shoes

The Shimano XC3 (also known as the SH-XC300) is a versatile, performance MTB shoe.

It's designed for cross-country (XC) riding, gravel adventures, and everyday trail use. It offers a blend of efficiency, comfort, and durability at a competitive price point.

The XC3 features a glove-like fit, thanks to its wraparound upper and BOA® L6 dial system. The L6 allows you to make easy, fast adjustments without causing pressure points.

The perforated synthetic leather upper enhances breathability. Keeping your feet cool during intense rides.

The low stack height sole design brings your foot closer to the pedal axle. Improving stability and power transfer.

And the XC3 is compatible with 2-bolt SPD cleats such as the Shimano SH51 or SH56. Note: the SH51 cleats are single release and only clip-out when you twist.

The SH56 cleats are multi-release. They clip-out when you twist or lift your heel and twist slightly. These are better for new riders.

Fox MTB shoes

Fox MTB shoes are called the Union. The Fox Union MTB shoe range comes in 2 types - Flat or Clipless.

The Union Flat shoes are available in a BOA version or laces. The Clipless version comes in BOA and Velcro strap.

The Fox Ultratac sole is a proprietary rubber compound and tread design.

It’s designed by Fox Racing to deliver maximum grip, durability, and pedal feel. Specifically for aggressive trail, enduro, and downhill riding.

Here’s what sets the Ultratac sole apart:

High Grip. The Ultratac rubber compound is formulated to be super tacky, so it sticks well to pedal pins on flat pedals. This helps keep your feet locked in place even over rough terrain and big hits.

Durable. While soft enough for grip, the Ultratac compound is designed to resist tearing and wear from pedal pins. Plus walking on rocks, or rough trails — giving the shoe a good lifespan.

Optimised Tread. The sole usually features a multi-directional hex or lug pattern, tailored for pedal pin engagement. This means you get solid grip on the pedals and reliable traction when hiking or scrambling over terrain.
