What is a 16 inch bike?
16 inch bikes can be divided into 2 types:
- 16 inch kids bikes
- 16 inch BMX bikes
First, 16 inch kids bikes.
These 16 inch bikes are designed for kids from 4 years old. That said, we have had tall 3 and a half year olds fit onto 16 inch bikes as well - depending on the frame size.
So it's important to note that the frame size varies on this type of 16 inch bike.
All 16 inch kids bikes will come with training wheels, a foot brake (also called a coaster brake) and front hand brake.
16 inch BMX bikes like the Mongoose Legion L16 don't use training wheels and they don't come with foot brakes.
These are stunt bikes.
They are designed to be ridden at skateparks and dirt jumps, learning tricks on. Therefore only suitable for kids who are confident riders and off training wheels.

16 inch bike gears and brakes
A 16 inch bike will have 1 gear.
The addition of gears adds complexity at this age, where kids are still learning the fundamentals of bike handling, balance and using brakes to control their speed.
16 inch bikes for kids have to have a front hand brake and rear coaster brake.
16 inch kids BMX bikes don't have a foot brake. Instead they use a front and rear hand brake.

Frame Materials
When choosing a 16 inch bike, one of the key differences is the frame material; either aluminium alloy or steel.
Alloy Frames
- Aluminium alloy is much lighter than steel, making the bike easier for kids to ride, balance, and pick up.
- Rust-Resistant. Great for families near the coast or for bikes that might be left outside.
- Ideal for Confident Riders. The lighter weight makes it perfect for kids who are starting to ride independently or without training wheels.
Steel Frames
- Durable & Budget-Friendly. Steel is strong and often more affordable, making it a great option for families looking for value.
Examples of steel frame 16 inch bikes are:
- Schwinn Koen (boys), Schwinn Elm (girls)
- Malvern Star Sparkle (girls), Malvern Star Radmax (boys)

Frame Sizing
A 16 inch bike is called that because it uses 16 inch diameter wheels. So every 16 inch bike in our range has the exact same size wheel.
But:
There is still something that's different between all these bikes.
And that is the frame size.
Different brands use a certain size frame for their 16 inch bike.
Example:
The Giant Animator 16 inch bike (boys) and Liv Adore 16 inch bike (girls) use a lower frame. For average sized 4 year olds, these are perfect.
The low frame delivers a low centre of gravity. It delivers lots of control and stability. It's also easier to transition off training wheels; riders can easily place their feet on the ground.
For taller riders, the Mongoose Missygoose 16 (girls) and Mongoose Mitygoose 16 (boys) are excellent options. As are the GT Grunge 16 and GT Siren 16.
All these 16 inch bike options have more reach (for long arms) and slightly taller frames (for long legs).
Not only will taller riders get more life out of the 16 inch bike, they'll be more comfortable riding it.
