Bike Tubes

(186 products)

Bike tubes (or bike inner tubes) are an essential part of any bike with traditional tyres.

They sit inside the tyre and hold air pressure, giving the tyre its shape and helping to absorb bumps on the road or trail.

Bike tubes come in a range of sizes and valve types to suit different wheel diameters and tyre widths.

At Ivanhoe Cycles, we stock a wide selection of high-quality inner tubes to fit road bikes, mountain bikes, gravel bikes, hybrids and kids’ bikes.

What Do Bike Tubes Do?

Bicycle tubes are inflatable rubber cylinders that sit inside a bicycle tyre.

They hold the air pressure that gives the tyre its shape and cushioning.

When inflated, the bike tube expands to press the tyre firmly against the rim. Allowing for smooth rolling, grip (essential) and shock absorption.

If a tyre loses pressure, it's usually the inner tube that has been punctured—not the tyre itself.

Details of bike tubes

Most are made of butyl rubber; lightweight tubes may use latex.

Valve Types.

Presta valves are narrow, used on road and performance bikes.

Schrader (or Auto) valves are larger (like car tyres) and used on hybrid bikes, mountain bikes and kids' bikes. These can be described as AV valves too.

Sizes.

Bike tubes come in different diameters and widths (e.g. 700x25–32c, 27.5x2.1–2.4”) to match the tyre.

The first number is the diameter following by the tyre width range the tube will suit. In the example above, these bike tubes will suit a tyre width of 25 to 32mm and 2.1 inches to 2.4 inches, respectively.

The "C" in a tyre size like 700×32c is a historical designation. It refers to an old French sizing system. It's legacy label that tells you it fits standard 700c wheels.

The "C" no longer corresponds to a measurable feature. It simply indicates that the tyre uses a 622mm bead seat diameter ( or internal diameter).

How do I know what bike tube to buy?

You can usually find the tyre size printed on the sidewall of your bike tyre.

Inner tubes are labelled with both a wheel diameter and a width range—for example: 26 x 1.95–2.125. This means the tube is designed to fit a 26-inch tyre with a width between 1.95 and 2.125 inches.

Once you’ve matched the size, you’ll also need to choose the correct valve type.

This is usually either a Presta valve or a Schrader valve.
