What Are Gravel Tyres?

Gravel bike tyres are built for mixed terrain.

They’re wider than road bike tyres (usually 35–50mm), giving you more grip and comfort on rough ground.

With smart tread patterns, they roll fast on smooth roads but still handle dirt, gravel, and light trails with ease.

Many are tubeless-ready, which means fewer flats and more control at lower pressures.

Types of Gravel Tyres

There are several types of gravel tyres designed for different conditions.

For hard dirt or road surfaces choose a gravel tyre with a smooth centre tread and raised side tread.

For loose surfaces with fine dirt choose a gravel tyre that has low-profile raised tread right across the tyre.

For mixed and loose-coarse surfaces, choose a gravel tyre that has a combination of open and tight-spaced tread. An example is the Vittoria Terreno Mix.

For muddy conditions, choose a gravel tyre with an open tread pattern with a deep tread. This will grip through the mud and stop it from sticking to the tyre.
