It combines a bright rear light with a radar sensor that detects vehicles approaching from behind, well before you would hear or see them yourself, and relays that information to a compatible bike computer or the Garmin app. 

For solo riders on quieter rural roads where traffic can appear with little warning, this extra layer of awareness is one of the more meaningful safety upgrades you can make to your kit.

Optical Profiles, Flash Patterns and Brake Sensing

Good rear lights are tuned differently for day and night use, with separate lumen ceilings for each mode so you get a strong daytime pulse without being blindingly bright to the rider behind you after dark. Flash pattern and lens amplification both affect how far your light is actually noticeable from, not just how bright it looks up close.

Smart brake sensing is one of the more useful recent additions to rear lights. An internal accelerometer detects sudden deceleration and automatically switches the light to a brighter, steady beam for a moment, mimicking a car's brake light and giving traffic behind you a much clearer signal that you are slowing down. Lumen needs vary more for rear lights than most riders expect. Group bunch rides generally call for a lower output, around 10 to 30 lumens, since anything brighter can properly dazzle the rider drafting close behind you. 

Standard solo night riding usually sits in the 30 to 70 lumen range, while a proper daytime pulse mode needs considerably more, typically 100 to 300 lumens or more, to stand out against full sun.

The flash frequency itself matters too. A varied, irregular flash pattern breaks up the visual background far more effectively than a slow, predictable pulse, which is why a lot of modern rear lights use deliberately staggered patterns. A strong flash pattern can realistically catch a driver's attention from over a kilometre away on an open road.

Mounting: Seatposts, Saddle Bags and Beyond

Most rear lights mount using a round silicone strap system, which fits the vast majority of standard seatposts without any extra hardware. For seatposts with a noticeable slope, an angled wedge mount keeps the light sitting level rather than pointing down at the road. 

Aero and D-shaped seatposts need a specific flush-mount design or shim kit to sit properly centred, so it is worth checking your seatpost profile before buying if you are running a more modern aero-shaped post.

Beyond the seatpost, plenty of riders also mount a secondary light elsewhere for extra visibility, including saddle bags, pannier racks, apparel loops on a jacket or backpack, or the rear vents of a helmet. A light mounted higher up, away from your legs and the rest of the bike, can be noticeably easier for drivers to pick out in traffic.

Battery Care Through the Wet Weather 

Rear lights cop the worst of the road spray thrown up by your back wheel, so it is worth regularly checking that the charging port cover is fully sealed, particularly after a wet ride. Water finding its way into the charging port is the most common cause of a rear light failing early.

If you are tucking your bike away for the off season, avoid storing the light at a full charge or completely flat. A partial charge, topped up every month or so, keeps the lithium cell in better long-term condition than leaving it at either extreme for weeks at a time.
