The Cannondale Trail SL 4 1x is a lightweight alloy hardtail mountain bike built for easy trails, fire roads, gravel and bike paths.

The SL frame is the lighter, faster-rolling version of Cannondale's Trail platform. SmartForm C2 alloy with SAVE dropped seatstays, a 100mm SR Suntour XCR fork with remote lockout, Shimano hydraulic disc brakes, tubeless-ready WTB wheels and a full Shimano Deore 11-speed drivetrain on a single front chainring.

Who is the Cannondale Trail SL 4 1x for?

It's for the rider who wants a proper mountain bike at the top end of recreational. One that will spend most of its life on bike paths, rail trails and gravel, but that you can point at an easy singletrack loop without regretting it.

It suits you if you:

  • Ride a mix of surfaces. The Main Yarra Trail on a weekday, Lysterfield Park on a Sunday, dirt, gravel and fire road in between.
  • Want the bike to be light and quick rather than plush and heavy. That's what the SL frame is for.
  • Want components you can actually live with. Deore is the drivetrain every bike shop in the country stocks parts for. The brakes are hydraulic so they need no fiddling, and the wheels can go tubeless (with tubeless tyres and tubeless valves).
  • Like the option to upgrade later. The frame takes a dropper post and routes it internally, and the wheels are on modern Boost spacing, so the two upgrades most people make are both open to you.

It's not the right bike if:

You're riding steep, rocky or technical descents, or anything with (big) jumps. 100mm of front travel, a hardtail rear end and 160mm rotors run out of road there.

The Cannondale Habit HT or a full-suspension trail bike are better options.

What "SL" actually means on a Cannondale Trail

Cannondale splits the Trail platform.

The Trail SL is the light, efficient one: less fork travel, faster-rolling tyres, a frame built to be light rather than bombproof.

The Trail SE goes the other way. More travel, more aggressive geometry, more weight.

The SL is the right end of that split for the riding this bike is bought for. On a rail trail or a fire road, 100mm of well-controlled travel and a fast tyre gets you further and fatigues you less than 130mm of soft fork and a heavy knobby tyre.

Three things in the frame are worth knowing:

SmartForm C2 alloy. Cannondale hydroforms and butts the tubes so material sits where the stress is and nowhere else. It's the reason a Cannondale alloy hardtail tends to weigh less than its price bracket suggests.

SAVE dropped seatstays. The seatstays join the seat tube low, below the top tube junction, and are shaped to flex vertically.

It's not suspension. You get a few millimetres of flex, but on a hardtail, a few millimetres of seated compliance over gravel chatter is the difference between a comfortable hour and a numb one.

Dropper post compatible, with internal routing. The frame is built and routed for a dropper and takes a 31.6mm post. At this price that's genuinely unusual, and it's the single upgrade that changes how a hardtail feels on a descent more than anything else you can buy.

The Deore 1x11 drivetrain

The 1x (say "one-by") means one chainring at the front instead of two.

One shifter, no front derailleur, no left-hand gear lever. Here it's a 30-tooth chainring driving Shimano's Deore 11-speed 11–42T cassette.

Why Deore is the right group at this price.

Deore is Shimano's workhorse mountain groupset, and the argument for it isn't performance on paper, it's that you can live with it for a decade.

Every bike shop in Australia has Deore chains, cassettes and hangers on the shelf. The shifter is Rapidfire Plus, so you can dump multiple gears in one push of the lever and release from either direction.

And the rear derailleur is a Shadow RD+ clutch design. This keeps tension in the chain over rough ground. That's what stops the chain slapping the chainstay and jumping off on a descent.

On a single-ring bike, the clutch is the part doing the work a front derailleur used to do, and a clutch derailleur is not standard equipment at $1,299.

What one chainring actually gives you. Nothing to get wrong. You can't cross-chain, you can't be in the wrong combination halfway up a climb, and there's one less cable and one less mechanism to knock out of adjustment. For most riders that's worth more than the gear range it costs.

The rest of the build, part by part

SR Suntour XCR suspension

The XCR sits above the XCM and XCE forks you find on most bikes at this price, and the two reasons matter. It has a 15mm thru-axle rather than a quick release, which stiffens the whole front end and makes the steering feel connected rather than vague. And it has a remote lockout at the bar, so you can firm the fork up for a sealed climb or a bike path stretch without stopping.

Shimano MT200 hydraulic disc brakes

Hydraulic, which is the part that matters:

One-finger braking, self-adjusting as the pads wear, no cable to re-tension. For the riding this bike is designed around it's more than enough, it's reliable, and pads are cheap and available everywhere.

WTB STX i23 wheels

The quiet highlight of the build.

The rims are tubeless ready with a 23mm internal width. This is a proper trail width, not a narrow XC rim.

The rear hub is Boost 12x148mm thru-axle and the front is 15mm, both current standards, which means when you want better wheels every wheel on the market fits.

Schwalbe Rocket Rick tyres

A fast-rolling XC tread: low, closely-spaced centre knobs so it doesn't drag on sealed surfaces, with shoulder blocks for cornering on dirt.

The right tyre for a bike that sees a lot of hard surface.

It's also the first thing to change if you end up riding more dirt than you planned. A grippier tyre on those tubeless-ready rims transforms the bike, and it costs less than any other upgrade you could make.

Cockpit

Cannondale 3 riser bar, 780mm, 0° stem. A 780mm bar is a modern trail width. It gives you leverage over the front wheel and a stable, wide position. A long way from the narrow bars entry hardtails used to come with. If it's too wide for the tracks you ride, we'll cut it down when you collect the bike.
