Exceptionally lightweight, without compromising on stiffness. The Mavic Cosmic Ultimate shoes are expertly made by cyclists, ensuring that they deliver the most important features an enthusiast wants in a road shoe.
Mavic have brought in some key design aspects to deliver a lightweight carbon sole shoe (a size 44 is just 275g per shoe) with a micro-adjustment dial and two velcro straps, good ventilation, a very stiff sole for great power transfer as you pedal, comfortable cushioning and anti-microbial properties.
Mavic Energy Full Carbon SLR Outsole
Shoe stiffness has a very important benefit: a stiff shoe provides the best power transference from your foot to your pedal, which means much less effort for the rider. (Imagine the alternative: riding in your sneakers. Not much power there, right?)
For this reason, the Cosmic Ultimate shoes are made with the Energy Full Carbon SLR Outsole, which is Mavic’s lightest and stiffest sole yet.
Ventilation points have been built into the soles to assist airflow through your shoes, which doesn’t compromise on stiffness.
These outsoles are thin at just 5.5 millimetres, which allows you to achieve a low stack height if desired.
You’ll be able to fit your preferred 3-hole cleat system, compatible with Shimano, Look and Speedplay road pedals.
Since the soles are much thinner than standard shoes, Mavic has specially included 8mm screws that they recommend you use when mounting the cleat.
Mavic Ergo Dial System
The Ergo Dial is Mavic’s lightweight dial-and-cable retention system that takes the place of the top primary closure strap, allowing you to make micro adjustments to your fit very quickly with one hand at the upper section of your shoe.
Two of Mavic’s Ergo Strap SL velcro straps offer secondary fastening towards the toe-end of the shoe.
This combination means you have the advantage of a dial system that won’t cut the circulation to your toes when you only want to tighten the fit up near your ankles.
Unlike more common hook and eye closure systems, the Ergo Strap SL works with a lighter, broader strap that is connected to the shoe through nylon guides and malleable Kevlar cords. They keep the weight down since much less Velcro is required, increase ventilation since they allow air movement through to the top of the foot, and can be precisely adjusted to prevent loss of blood flow.
Mavic Ergo 3D Tongue
Unlike your typical shoe where the tongue is an extra section positioned in the middle, which can put some uncomfortable pressure on your foot, Mavic have used their Ergo 3D Tongue which is actually an extension of the shoe’s side, overlapping across in one seamless piece. This eliminates seams which can feel uncomfortable, and accomodates many different foot shapes and insteps.
This Tongue provides excellent cushioning for comfort and with its 3D mesh construction it is pleasantly breathable as well.
Mavic Energy Frame Carbon and Energy Lock Carbon Comp Heel Support
Surrounding the one-piece upper is Mavic’s Energy Frame Carbon.
This layer of thin, supportive carbon acts as a spin on the exterior of the shoe starting at the outside heel and wrapping around to the medial side of the foot. It is ultra-supportive but still compliant enough to be comfortable.
The carbon fiber that is used is actually woven with a flexible polymer for maximum support and energy transfer.
This is finished by the Energy Lock Carbon Comp heel support band that wraps around the heel for added stiffness, and holds the heel in place without causing friction points or hot spots.
Mavic Ergo Fit 3D plus OrthoLite insole
Mavic’s insole is a supportive, low height insole that provides comfort and structure to assist with your power transfer. It is a dual density insole that have been designed using OrthoLite cushioning foam and EVA heel and arch support.
The 3D dual density construction guarantees that your foot will feel cushioned and reinforced, but without taking up unnecessary room.
And the OrthoLite property will increase the effectiveness of the cushioning while increasing moisture management and breathability. OrthoLite also has anti-microbial agents, so that you won’t have to worry about noisome odors developing in your shoes after several hours on the road.
