Fox Mountain Bike Gear

Fox Racing started out building motocross gear long before mountain biking looked anything like it does today, and a lot of what makes their MTB range good still traces back to that motocross background. Protection that actually gets used, apparel built to survive real crashes rather than just look tough, and a range wide enough to kit a rider out from first bike to full downhill setup.

Ivanhoe Cycles has stocked Fox mountain bike gear for a long time, and we're still a family-owned Australian bike shop after nearly 40 years serving Melbourne's cycling community. If you're new to the brand and not sure where to start, our team can steer you toward the right tier for how you actually ride.

Ranger, Flexair or Defend: Which Fox Tier Fits You?

Fox MTB clothing and protective gear is organised into three tiers, and understanding the difference makes shopping the range a lot easier.

  • Fox Ranger is the everyday tier, built for trail riding and general use at a more accessible price point. Whether Fox Ranger shorts or something else, this is a sensible starting point if you're building your first proper kit.
  • Fox Flexair sits above it, using lighter, more breathable fabric aimed at racing and hot weather riding where every extra gram and degree of airflow counts.
  • Defend is the toughest of the three, with reinforced panelling and armour built in for riders who are regularly pushing into rougher, higher consequence terrain.

Beyond the core three, Fox also runs dedicated youth and women's lines, along with a casual, off-bike lifestyle range if you want to wear the brand without looking like you're headed straight to the trailhead.

What D3O Protection Actually Does

D3O shows up across a lot of Fox's knee and elbow guards, and it's worth understanding in plain terms rather than just as a name on a hangtag. It's a soft, flexible material under normal movement, so it doesn't feel like you're wearing rigid armour while you're pedalling or moving around. The moment it's hit with a sudden impact, like a fall, the material's molecules lock together almost instantly and it stiffens to absorb and spread the force. Once the impact's over, it goes soft again.

That's the general idea behind most modern body armour now, not just Fox's version of it: comfortable enough to forget you're wearing it, but ready to do its job the instant something goes wrong.

Getting Fox Helmet Sizing Right

Fox helmet sizing runs on its own scale rather than a universal small, medium, large, so it's worth checking the specific size chart for the model you're after rather than assuming your size in one Fox helmet carries across to another. Measure around the widest part of your head, roughly level with your eyebrows, and match that circumference against the chart.

Fit matters more with a helmet than almost anything else in this range. A helmet sitting slightly loose won't protect you properly no matter how good the foam and MIPS technology inside it are, so if you're between sizes or unsure, it's worth trying a couple on in store rather than guessing from an online chart alone.

How the Fox Mountain Bike Gear Works Together

Fox builds MIPS into most of its open face and full face helmets, using a slip layer inside the shell that helps redirect rotational force away from your brain during an angled impact rather than absorbing it head on. Pair that with D3O knee and elbow guards and you've got protection that covers both the impact itself and the twisting forces that come with most real-world falls, not just a straight on hit.

Underneath the more visible armour, a lot of Fox's protective gear also uses low-profile mesh padding at pressure points like the hips and tailbone. It's there to take the edge off a hard landing without adding bulk or trapping heat the way thicker padding would.

Fabric Tech for Every Melbourne Trail Day

Fox mountain bike gear is partnered with a few established textile makers rather than developing everything in-house (such as Cordura and Polartec), and it shows in the range. Fox's inhouse TruDri fabric handles moisture wicking in jerseys and base layers, pulling sweat away from your skin on a hot climb. Cordura shows up in high wear areas where abrasion resistance matters more than breathability, and Polartec lines some of the cooler weather gear for genuine warmth without excessive bulk.

For Melbourne's mix of conditions, it's worth building toward a couple of options rather than one do it all jacket. Lightweight mesh gear covers the hot months, while a seam sealed, DWR coated rain jacket earns its keep on the wetter, colder rides through winter.

Caring for Your Fox Mountain Bike Gear

Fox's technical fabrics and armour hold up a lot longer with the right care. Wash on a cold cycle using a mild detergent, and avoid fabric softener, which coats the fibres and reduces breathability over time. Heat drying, softeners and bleach are a hard no across the whole range, helmets, gloves and riding pants included, since they all shorten the life of the materials in different ways.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does online stock inventory precisely match real time showroom availability?

We do our best to keep online stock accurate across all three stores, but with three showrooms and a warehouse all moving stock, occasional mismatches can happen. If you're after a specific item, feel free to call your local store to double check before heading in.

How are out of stock seasonal Fox apparel items backordered?

Popular seasonal lines can usually be backordered through us, and we'll give you an estimated timeframe based on what Fox has confirmed for restocking. Get in touch with our team for the latest on any specific item.

What is the difference between Fox Ranger, Flexair and Defend?

Ranger is the everyday, accessible tier for general trail riding. Flexair is lighter and more breathable, built for racing and hot weather. Defend is the toughest of the three, with reinforced panelling and built in armour for rougher terrain.

What is D3O and how does it work?

D3O is a flexible material that stays soft during normal movement but stiffens almost instantly on impact to absorb and spread the force, then softens again afterwards. It's used across a lot of Fox's knee and elbow guards.

Does Fox make womens and youth MTB gear?

Yes, Fox runs dedicated women's and youth lines alongside the main adult range, covering clothing, helmets and protection.

Is Fox MTB gear the same as Fox motocross gear?

No, though the brand's motocross background shaped a lot of its design approach. Fox's MTB clothing range is built specifically for pedalling and mountain bike specific movement, using lighter, more breathable materials suited to human power rather than a motor.

What size Fox gear should I order?

Sizing varies by category, and Fox helmet sizing in particular runs on its own scale rather than a universal chart. Check the specific size guide for the item you're after, and our team can help you size correctly in store if you're unsure.

How do I wash Fox technical apparel?

Wash on a cold cycle with a mild detergent, and avoid fabric softener, bleach and the tumble dryer, all of which shorten the life of the technical fabric and any built in armour.
