Why Riders Choose Giro Helmets

Giro has built a reputation for producing quality helmets. They combine the latest design language, safety and comfort across all cycling disciplines.

Our customers choose Giro helmets because they:

  • Have a rounded internal mould shape, that fits most head profiles correctly.
  • Once on, the rear RocLoc adjustment feature "holds" the head securely.
  • Offer adequate to above-average ventilation, depending on the helmet's purpose.
  • Have the best fitting fitting recreational and childrens bike helmets.

Giro Helmet Technology Explained

What is Mips technology used in Giro helmets?

Mips stands for Multi-directional Impact Protection System.

Mips is a low-friction liner inside the helmet that allows for 10-15mm of movement between the helmet and head.

Mips is designed to reduce rotational forces to the brain. These rotational forces are the cause of severe brain trauma and concussion.

It does this be absorbing and redirecting rotational forces away from the brain.

MIPS technology is commonly found in road cycling helmets, MTB helmets and kids helmets in the Giro range.

Also worth noting that there are several different types of MIPS layers used inside helmets.

There are 5 different types of Mips. Each one is built a little different to balance weight, airflow and integration inside the helmet.

  • Mips Essential Core. An entry-level Mips system that uses rubber tabs to connect the liner and helmet padding.
  • Mips Evolve Core. The most common Mips layer. It has a smooth plastic-like liner between the helmet padding and helmet shell.
  • Mips Air Node. Designed for lightweight and airflow. It integrates directly into the padding using small, localised hook and loop nodes.
  • Mips Spherical. A premium ball and socket design found in high-end performance bike helmets.
  • Mips Integra Split. The cleanest integration of Mips. It's almost invisible. The slip plane is directly built into the helmet's foam shell rather than sitting outside of it. Most MTB helmets use the "Split" version of Mips.

Learn more about how Mips works on the official Mips website.

What is Giro MIPS Spherical technology?

A premium "ball-and-socket" design found in high-end performance bike helmets.

It features two separate layers of foam that rotate independently around each other. One above and one below. Mips Spherical completely hides the moving mechanism inside the helmet structure.

We see Mips Spherical on high-end Giro road bike helmets, like the Giro Helios or Giro Aries.

Some advantages for Mips Spherical are:

  • Better Ventilation. Common Mips liners use a plastic sheet which blocks airflow. Mips Spherical integrates into the foam, allowing air vents to be designed as they would without Mips.
  • Progressive Layers. Each foam layer is made form different densities. The outer layer is firmer, better for high-speed impacts. The lower section is softer, best for low-speed impacts.

What is Roc Loc?

Short for Rotor Location. Roc Loc is Giro's adjustable fit system - controlled by a sensitive round dial. It's designed to create a secure and personalised fit.

Riders can make small fit adjustments quickly while riding, helping improve comfort and stability.

In addition to the radial adjustment, RocLoc has 3 vertical positions. This means the rear bracket has 3 positions on the back of your head, further customising fit.

What is In-Mould construction?

In-mould construction bonds the helmet shell to the internal foam liner during manufacturing. This process helps reduce weight while maintaining structural strength and durability.

The result is a helmet that feels lightweight without sacrificing protection.

FAQs

Are Giro helmets good?

Giro helmets are widely used across road cycling, mountain biking and recreational riding because of their combination of comfort, safety technology and fit adjustment systems.

Which Giro helmet is best for road cycling?

The best Giro road helmet depends on riding goals. Riders focused on lightweight climbing performance may prefer different models than riders prioritising aerodynamic efficiency or long-distance comfort.

Which Giro helmet is best for mountain biking?

Mountain bike riders generally benefit from helmets with additional coverage and trail-specific features. The best option depends on terrain, riding style and level of protection required.

Do Giro helmets fit true to size?

Giro helmets are generally larger. That said each helmet has a sizing guide, but fit can vary depending on model and head shape.

Measuring head circumference before choosing a helmet is recommended.

How should a Giro helmet fit?

A Giro helmet should sit level on the head and feel secure without pressure points. The fit system should hold the helmet comfortably while keeping movement to a minimum.

Then you can adjust the vertical position of the rear racket higher or lower to further tune fit.
