The Different Types of Road Bikes

Australia’s extensive road networks and shared paths make road cycling a great choice for both everyday riding and performance-focused training. Getting the right fit and features helps deliver the speed, comfort, and long-term enjoyment you’re looking for. Let’s take a look at your options.

Endurance Road Bikes

Endurance road bikes prioritise comfort over aggressive positioning. They feature a more upright riding position, delivering greater comfort for bike riders. A longer wheelbase, calmer steering and lower centre of gravity result in better stability and easier handling at high-speed. Enduroad road bikes also have wider tyres, making them more comfortable to ride on rougher roads and smooth dirt. These bikes are popular with riders looking to cover longer distances and those wanting less strain on the back and neck. A great example of this category can be found in our Giant endurance road bike range.

Race Road Bikes

Race road bikes are all about speed and efficiency. Expect aggressive geometry, lighter frames and stiff construction to really maximise power transfer. These bikes suit experienced riders, fast group rides and anyone looking to get involved in racing.

Aero Bikes

Aero bikes help maintain a higher average speed and they are built for short distance crit racing compared to Endurance and Race bikes. These have the stiffest frames due to their deep aerodynamic frame shapes. A popular example is the Giant Propel.

A Look at the Main Features

Road bikes can come with a huge range of construction types and components. As you can imagine, this directly affects the quality of your ride.

Frame Materials: Aluminium vs Carbon

Aluminium road bikes are all about excellent value. They’re most popular when it comes to commuting, recreational road riding, or if buying your first road bike.

Then we have carbon road bikes, which tend to be lighter and absorb road vibration more effectively. You’ll often get a smoother ride and improved efficiency over longer distances. Carbon frames are often chosen by endurance riders and those upgrading from an aluminium men's road bike to something a little more performance-focused.

Wheels and Tyres

Most road bikes use 700c wheels because they roll efficiently and maintain speed well on sealed surfaces. Wider tyres will improve comfort and grip, whereas something narrower favours speed and responsiveness.

Our Road Bike Sizing Guide

Correct sizing plays a major role in comfort, control, and injury prevention. Check out our sizing guide below:

Inseam measurement is just as important. A correct fit should allow for a slight knee bend at full pedal extension and a comfortable reach to the handlebars without excessive strain.

If you’re unsure, don’t worry. Our team is ready and waiting to provide in-store sizing and setup so your road bike fits properly from day one.

Care and Maintenance Tips for Road Bikes

Just like any bike, road bikes will benefit from regular upkeep. Here’s a quick, easy checklist of what you can keep an eye on.

  • Keep tyres inflated to the recommended pressure.
  • Clean and lubricate the chain regularly to maintain smooth shifting.
  • Check brakes and gears for consistent performance.
  • Inspect tyres for wear, especially if riding frequently on urban roads.

We also stock plenty of road-specific riding gear and accessories that support comfort and performance, including Shimano road cycling shoes and road bike pedals.

Getting the Right Bike for You

When getting your hands on the right road bike, it’s important to think about how and where you ride. Consider:

  • Riding purpose. It might be commuting, fitness, endurance riding, or racing.
  • Frame material. Aluminium is better for value and carbon for comfort and performance.
  • Geometry and comfort. Choose between endurance bikes or race-focused setups.
  • Components. Reliable gearing and braking that’s suited to your riding conditions.

Ivanhoe Cycles stocks a massive range of road bikes from trusted brands. Our experienced staff always take the time to understand your goals, and we’ll be with you right from the start to help you find a bike you’re sure to love.

FAQs

What is the difference between aluminium and carbon road bikes?

Aluminium road bike frames are heavier than carbon, but only by a matter of grams, not kilograms. They also aren't quite as smooth on the road as carbon road bikes are. That's because the carbon frame does a better job at absorbing vibrations.

However bikes like the Giant Contend AR come close, with their specially designed seat post, handlebars and wider tyres. Carbon bikes are generally stiffer. This means they can handle twisting loads better which results in better handling, especially when cornering.

How do I know what size road bike I need?

Road bike sizing comes down to height and reach. A correct fit should allow for a slight bend in the knee when your leg is fully extended and a comfortable reach to the handlebars.

Our team will size you in-store and make any adjustments so you get the perfect fit.

Can I use a road bike for commuting?

Yes. Many riders use road bikes for commuting because they are fast, efficient, and lightweight on sealed roads and bike paths. A more relaxed or endurance-style road bike is often best for daily riding.

What features should I look for in a road bike?

Some main features to look out for include:

  • Frame material such as carbon or aluminium.
  • Geometry. Endurance, Race or Aero.
  • Gears. Get the most amount of gears you can afford. They start at 8 gears and go to 12. Every step up gets you better parts, smoother shifting and durability.
  • Brakes. Most road bikes will have disc brakes. Higher-level road bikes will have hydraulic disc brakes. These deliver better stopping power, more control and less maintenance.
