What are tubeless bike tyres?

A tubeless bike tyre runs without an inner tube.

Instead of a tube holding the air, the tyre seals directly against the rim, and a small amount of liquid sealant inside seals punctures as they happen.

It's the same idea across road, gravel and mountain biking, and most quality wheels and tyres today are built "tubeless-ready" for it.

Why ride tubeless?

  • Fewer flats. The sealant plugs small punctures instantly, and with no tube there are no pinch flats ("snakebites") when you hit an edge or a rock.
  • More grip and comfort. With no tube to pinch, you can safely run lower pressures for a bigger contact patch; more traction on the trail and less buzz on the road.
  • A little faster. Removing the tube cuts the friction between tube and tyre, which lowers rolling resistance.

The trade-off is setup:

Tubeless takes a bit more to install and needs a sealant top-up every few months. Once it's running, most riders don't look back.

Tubeless vs tubed (clincher) tyres

A traditional clincher uses an inner tube to hold air.

Tubeless removes the tube and relies on an airtight tyre-and-rim seal plus sealant.

Tubed setups are simpler to fix with a spare tube and need no sealant; tubeless resists punctures better, rolls a touch faster and runs lower pressures, at the cost of a fiddlier install.

You can still fit an inner tube to a tubeless tyre to get home if a big cut won't seal. However, before using a tube, we'd recommend using a tubeless tyre plug kit (like the Muc-Off Stealth Tubeless Plug Kit) because it's faster, less messy and easier.

"Tubeless-ready" and Hookless (what to check)

Most modern tyres are labelled tubeless-ready (often marked TR or TLR).

They're designed to seal to a tubeless rim with sealant.

You must pair a tubeless-ready tyre with a tubeless-ready rim, valves, rim tape and sealant and you're set.

If your wheels are hookless (a rim with no bead hook, increasingly common on newer road and gravel wheels), you must run a hookless-approved tubeless tyre and stay within the rim's maximum pressure (often around 72psi) on the road.

Always check the tyre and rim maker's compatibility and pressure chart before fitting.

Mountain bike

What you need for a tubeless setup

Going tubeless works as a system, so a few essentials sit alongside the tyre itself, and you'll find all of them in our tubeless setup range.

Fresh tubeless sealant is what plugs punctures on the move, and it needs replacing every few months as it dries out.

Tubeless valves and tubeless rim tape create the airtight seal between the tyre and the rim. If your current wheels aren't converted yet, a tubeless conversion kit bundles what you need to make the switch, while tyre inserts add rim protection and run-flat security for harder trail and enduro riding.

Can I put any tyre on hookless rims?

No. Hookless rims require a hookless-approved tubeless tyre and have a maximum pressure; often around 72psi on the road. Always check the tyre and rim maker's compatibility chart.

Do I need sealant with tubeless tyres?

Yes. Sealant seals the tyre to the rim and plugs punctures as they happen. Refresh it every few months, as it dries out over time.

Can I fit a tube to a tubeless tyre?

It's possible but not advisable. Tubeless tyres usually have a much tighter fit to the rim.

If your tubeless tyre won't seal after a puncture, use a good quality tubeless puncture plug kit to get you home.
