ByK E540 9-speed
The ByK E540 is a lightweight 24-inch bike. For kids riding around suburbia and inner city, it's one of the easiest bikes to ride in our range.
This preview will explain the E540 in a bit more detail.
Who is the Byk E540 for?
ByK designed the E540 for kids who are at least 8 years old.
Ideally riders are off training wheels, have good coordination and bike skills.
Riders also have to be comfortable with or, at least ready to use, hand brakes. That's because the E540 doesn't come with foot brakes.
But, we see this as a positive. Hand brakes allow kids to control their speed easier.
It's designed for pavement, bike paths and smooth rail trails. So if this is the type of terrain you'll be spending time on, the E450 will feel at home.
ByK E540 Components.
The E540 9 speed is built with simple but robust components.
First, the gears.
A single front gear is paired to 9 back gears.
The advantage with a single front gear is that there's a lot less moving parts; no front derailleur, gear shift or cable.
It also simplifies operating gears; riders only need to focus on rear gears. This means only using the gear shifter on the right-hand side of the handlebar.
The red indicator lets rider's know what gear they're in.
Gear number 9 is the hardest; best for going fast downhill. Number 1 is the easiest; making climbing up steep hills easier.
For flatter or gently undulating terrain, keep the red indicator somewhere in the middle.
Next, the brakes.
The E540 9-speed uses really good quality Tektro linear pull brakes.
More importantly, the brake pads make contact on a machined braking surface (the silver bit on the rim).
The grooves on the rim create a rougher texture and deliver better performance in dry and wet conditions.
The rim brakes are paired to short reach brake levers which are perfect for small hands.
From their standard position, the brake levers can be adjusted even further, allowing them to sit closer to the handlebar.
