A DEEPER DIVE
Like Giant’s “Talon” mountain bike range, Haro’s Double Peak is a great option for riders spending time on bike paths, rail trails and (beginner friendly) mountain bike trails.
WHO IS IT FOR?
The Double Peak Sport represents excellent value for someone who is riding bike paths, rail trails, and light dirt or gravel tracks.
It’s not a serious off-road mountain bike. The Double Peak is at home on easy, low impact trails.
THE FRAME
Is made of a material called X6 aluminium. It’s light. It’s strong. And it’s better than the vast majority of aluminium frames we’ve seen at this price point too.
All the cables (for the majority of their length) are hidden inside the Double Peak Sport’s frame. Not only does this create a clean appearance, it also means less maintenance.
Straight tubing lines means no excess weight. There’s also a new head tube. It’s mirrored along its halfway point creating a flare towards the middle. This is done for extra strength and to reduce unwanted front end flex.
Images don’t quite do justice to the strong lines and substantial width of each tubing section.
The result?
Better pedalling efficiency and handling.
THE COMPONENTS
Firstly, the Vaxa suspension fork has 100mm of travel which is quite normal for recreational mountain bikes. It easily handles light dirt and gravel trails, as well as bike paths and rail trails.
The blue lockout lever on the right hand-side fork leg opens (soft) or closes (hard) the suspension. It means when the suspension is closed, it hardens and the power you’re putting into the Sport goes into forward motion - not suspension bob.
Mechanical disc brakes are better than normal calliper brakes. These are controlled via a Shimano brake lever for better stopping power. Disc brakes not only deliver better stopping power, they also deliver more control. And they work better in dry and wet conditions. And they don’t get affected if the wheel gets out of alignment.
You get the point - the advantages are numerous.
Then we move onto the Double Peak Sport’s gears.
There are 2 front gears (modern) paired to 8 rear gears (mid-range recreational). Delivering a total of 16 gears.
Each gear is actuated via Shimano’s trigger or Rapid Fire shifter. It’s fast and precise, in typical Shimano fashion.
Kenda’s Aptor 27.5” tyre is an excellent option for varied road and bike paths. It’s fast rolling and efficient on roads and sealed paths. And also grips on hardpack, unsealed surfaces.
