The Instinct Powerplay SL Carbon 70 is a lightweight, mid-power carbon electric mountain bike. It uses a 160mm of Fox 36 Factory up front, 150mm out back through Rocky Mountain's mid-high pivot Smoothlink linkage, and Rocky's own Dyname S4 Lite drive making 75Nm and 700W peak from a 480Wh removable battery.
It sits deliberately between the two bikes most people are choosing from.
Around three kilos lighter than a full-power e-MTB, so it still changes direction and gets off the ground like a mountain bike. But making far more power than the 55–60Nm ultra-light systems, so you don't pay for that on the climb.
Full SMOOTHWALL carbon frame and rear triangle, SRAM Eagle 90 Transmission, SRAM Maven Silver brakes, DT Swiss hybrid-rated wheels, Maxxis Minions. Designed in Canada.
The Dyname S4 Lite Motor
Rocky Mountain is the only major mountain bike brand that builds its own motor. Everyone else fits Bosch, Shimano, Brose or DJI. The reason that matters is architectural.
Every other mid-drive turns your bottom bracket. The Dyname turns your chain.
On a conventional e-MTB the motor's output shaft is the crank spindle, so its internal gearing spins whenever you pedal. The Dyname delivers power to the chain through an idler pulley, leaving your cranks on a separate path.
Three things follow:
- No drag above the cut-off. Past 25 km/h on most e-MTBs you're turning a gearbox as well as a chain. Here you're just riding a bike.
- Silent descending. Nothing spinning behind the chainring means no drivetrain whine on the way down.
- Mechanical torque sensing. Instead of strain gauges and software, the Dyname reads
The motor is 2.3 kg, several hundred grams lighter than the full-power units it matches on torque, and it's tuned to peak at low cadence. So it pulls hardest exactly where a steep tech climb makes you slow.
480Wh Battery
The fair question about any mid-power e-MTB is whether the battery is enough.
A low-RPM motor is an efficient one, which is why a battery this size doesn't ride like one.
- Mixed modes on rolling trail: five-plus hours of moving time, or two solid after-work laps between charges.
- Everything in full power: closer to two hours. Plan accordingly.
- Charging: under three hours on the supplied FAST charger, so it charges between rides rather than overnight.
If you want more:
The Overtimepack 2.0 range extender adds 314Wh to the downtube 794Wh total. More than most full-power e-MTBs carry as standard. Fit it for the big days, leave it home the rest of the time.
The suspension, and how you adjust it
Smoothlink here is a four-bar Horst link with a raised main pivot.
The point of raising it is the rearward axle path:
The wheel moves back as well as up, so it gets out of the way of a square-edged hit instead of being driven into it.
That's the mechanism behind the brake-bump-erasing feel, and it shows up most in braking chatter and rooted straight-line chunder. The cost of a rearward path is chain growth which is what the idler solves, the same idler the motor drives through.
Three adjustments let you fit the bike to yourself:
RIDE-4. One rotating chip, one Allen key, four geometry positions. About a minute to change head and seat angle and BB height.
Adjustable reach headset. Neutral cups fitted, +/-5mm cups in the box. A 10mm reach window without changing stem length, which is what resolves being between sizes.
Proportional rear centre. The chainstays grow with the frame.
Most brands run one length across the range, so an XL rider sits much further back over the rear wheel than a small rider does, and the two bikes handle nothing alike.
Sizing the rear to the front keeps the balance consistent.
And the Jumbotron display means power delivery is customised on the bike, on the trail, with a tap. No app, no Bluetooth pairing, no firmware update you didn't ask for at the trailhead.
Who it's for
It suits you if:
You want an e-MTB that still rides like a mountain bike. You've ruled out the ultra-lights on power. You ride real descents and want 160mm of Fox 36 Factory and Maven brakes behind you; you'd rather add range for big days than carry it every day.
It's not for you if:
You want the absolute lightest e-MTB with better than average power.
You want maximum assist and don't care about weight (a full-power Altitude Powerplay out-climbs it, and weighs four to five kilos more); a silent motor under load is non-negotiable; or you want wireless shifting.
The build
Fox 36 Float EVOL GRIP X Factory, 160mm. Kashima stanchions and the full GRIP X damper. The 36 chassis is the right stiffness for e-MTB weight a 34 would flex.
Fox Float X Factory, 230x60mm. Piggyback reservoir for heat on long descents, and a size-specific tune is not standard practice, and it does more for feel than most component upgrades.
SRAM Maven Silver, 4-piston, metal pads. SRAM's most powerful trail brake. Metal pads from new too. More power and far better fade resistance than organics, at the cost of some noise when cold and wet.
SRAM Eagle 90 Transmission, 10–52T. Mounts directly to the frame through the UDH interface. No derailleur hanger, much harder to damage, never needs indexing. Shift-under-load matters more on an e-bike than anywhere. Dump gears mid-climb with the motor pulling and it just goes.
Race Face Turbine Cinch, 165mm all sizes. Short cranks are standard on e-MTBs now fewer pedal strikes, and you keep pedalling through terrain where 175s clip rocks.
DT Swiss H1900 Spline, 30mm internal. The H is the important letter. Hybrid-rated for e-bike torque, with a steel freehub (aluminium ones get chewed) and an 18T Ratchet LN driver.
Maxxis Minion DHF 2.5 / DHR II 2.4, EXO+. The default competent trail combination. If you ride rocky terrain hard, a heavier rear casing or a tyre insert is a cheap, worthwhile change.
OneUp V3 dropper, 150mm (SM) to 240mm (XL). Size-specific lengths, so the smaller sizes get proper drop too.
