Scott Genius 930

The Scott Genius 930 is an alloy trail mountain bike with 160mm of travel up front and 150mm at the rear, on 29in wheels.

It's built for riders who pedal their way to the top and want a bike that can handle steeper, rougher singletrack on the way down.

The 930 is the alloy Genius, but it keeps the features that make the platform different: a shock hidden inside the frame, Scott's TwinLoc suspension remote and an adjustable head angle.

The shock lives inside the frame

Scott's Integrated Suspension Technology tucks the rear shock inside the frame, where most bikes hang it out in the open.

The shock sits away from the spray of mud, water and grit off the rear wheel, which helps it stay cleaner between services. The frame also looks clean, with no shock or linkage sticking out.

The suspension design is Scott's Virtual 4 Link, driving a Fox Float Performance trunnion shock with 150mm of travel.

TwinLoc

TwinLoc 2 is a lever on the handlebar that changes the fork and shock together. It has three modes:

• Descend: fully open, all 160mm and 150mm of travel, for steep and rough descents.
• Trail: firms up the suspension and reduces the rear shock's travel. The bike sits higher in its travel and pedals more efficiently on rolling singletrack and technical climbs.
• Lockout: locks the fork and shock, for fire roads and sealed climbs where you don't want any bob.

It means you don't have to reach down to the shock or up to the fork mid-ride. You flick one lever as the trail changes. The same remote also controls the dropper post.

Adjustable head angle

The Syncros headset cups let you adjust the head angle by 0.6 degrees either way.

A slacker head angle is more stable on steep, fast descents. A steeper one is quicker to steer on tight, twisting trails and climbs.

It's a one-off setup change rather than something you'd switch every ride, but it lets you tune the bike to where you ride most.

Fox 36 fork and SRAM DB8 brakes

The fork is a Fox 36 Float Rhythm with 160mm of travel.

The 36 is Fox's trail chassis, with stiffer 36mm stanchions than a lighter 34mm trail fork. That extra stiffness keeps the front wheel tracking where you point it through rocks and roots.

Braking is SRAM DB8, a 4-piston brake with a 200mm front rotor and 180mm rear.

Four pistons and a big front rotor give strong, consistent braking on long descents, where smaller brakes can fade.

Shimano XT and Deore 12-speed

Shifting is Shimano 12-speed, with an XT rear derailleur, a Deore shifter and a Deore 10-51T cassette.

The derailleur is the part that decides how crisp and reliable each shift feels, so that's where Scott put the higher-tier XT. The Praxis crank has a 32T chainring. With the 51T cassette, that gives a low gear for long, steep climbs.

Wheels and tyres

The wheels use Syncros X-30S rims with a 30mm internal width, tubeless ready, on Formula hubs. The tyres are Maxxis Dissector 2.6in front and rear, tubeless ready with EXO casing.

The Dissector is a fast-rolling, grippy trail tyre, and the 2.6in width adds grip and comfort. EXO is a lighter casing, though.

If you ride steep, rocky trails hard, a tougher front tyre with a heavier casing is the first upgrade worth making. Our workshop can swap tyres and set them up tubeless when you buy at an extra cost.

Dropper post and cockpit

A Syncros Duncan dropper post is fitted, with travel matched to frame size:

• Small: 125mm
• Medium: 150mm
• Large and X-Large: 170mm

The cockpit is a 780mm Syncros Hixon alloy bar with 12mm of rise. The cables route through Syncros' integration system in the stem and headset for a clean front end. A fork fender comes fitted.
