A DEEP DIVE
Shogun’s EB5 electric bike is designed for the recreational rider. This preview will cover what the bike is about, who should consider it and details about the major components.
WHO SHOULD CONSIDER THE EB5?
The EB5 is ideal If you’re new to riding or returning to riding after many years.
You’ll be spending time on bike paths and rail trails that have a combination of bitumen, light dirt and gravel.
And lastly, you’ll be using the EB5 for general fitness rides and semi-serious commuting.
ABOUT THE EB5
As a recreational e-bike, the EB5 is designed for all fitness levels and the ergonomics will suit those who are not conditioned to cycling.
In other words:
You don’t ride a lot, but when you do you want to be comfortable on long bike rides.
That is because Shogun has designed the EB5 to place riders in a relaxed riding position.
A tall front end and short reach to the bars places your hands closer to you and higher up; taking pressure off the arms, neck and back. No it’s not as upright as a beach cruiser but certainly more so than average.
EB5 ELECTRONICS
Now the electronics.
Ananda have been designing drive units for 20 years for brands throughout the bike industry.
The EB5’s power source is Ananda’s M81BBTR mid-drive unit. It’s designed specifically for city riding and trekking.
Torque output for the M81 sits at 80Nm. This is above average, as most recreational e-bikes are designed around 50-60Nm. What this means is more pulling power on the climbs and faster acceleration.
The drive unit is paired to the clean integrated down-tube battery. At 10.4Ah, the total size of the battery is 374 Watt-hours. Charging time is up to 6 hours.
The battery can be charged on the bike or removed and charged inside. A key-lock allows riders to release the battery.
The display shows riders current speed, trip/total distance, battery level and assistance level.
THE MECHANICAL SIDE
For the gears, things are kept simple and easy. A single front chain ring is paired to 9 rear gears.
A 9-speed gearing system sits at the upper-end of recreational and delivers smoother gear changes than lower speed units such as 7 and 8.
The gears are controlled via a trigger shifter on the handlebar. Compared to grip or twist shifters, the trigger is easier to use and way more precise.
Next, we’ll cover the brakes.
Like many mid-range electric bikes, the EB5 comes with hydraulic disc brakes. In fact, with the heavier weight of e-bikes, hydraulic disc brakes should be very high up on your list of requirements (and if budget permits).
That’s because hydro brakes are more powerful and deliver more control, especially when slowing down on a fast descent. Plus, they require significantly less maintenance than mechanical brakes.
Shogun has made the EB5 more versatile by using wider 38mm wide tyres. Making it ideal for those who want to ride on smooth dirt and gravel Rail Trails, in addition to bike paths.
