    XDS APEX GR (2021)

The XDS Apex GR (GR for Gravel) is a brand new addition to Ivanhoe Cycles’ E-Bike range. It’s unique design will appeal to most riders. So in this preview, I’m going to explain who should buy it, why you should consider it and outline the component package.

    WHO IS APEX FOR?

The Apex GR should be on your shortlist if: * You live and ride in regional areas where there’s equal amounts of dirt and gravel, to sealed bike paths. * Or, you’re commuting or touring and want a low-maintenance and efficient drivetrain. As well as a bike that can easily mount mud-guards and pannier racks.

    THE APEX IN DETAIL

First, XDS produces some of the best aluminum frames in the industry for themselves and other brands. They are properly good at what they do. So the confidence is there that the new Apex GR is going to deliver on handling and reliability.

High-end frame features are certainly abundant on the new Apex. This includes thru-axle front and rear wheels. If you’re new to thru-axles (most riders who are upgrading are) you’ll be amazed at the difference it makes to the handling (cornering especially) of a bike. Because thru-axles are a LOT thicker in diameter, they hold wheels in the frame more securely. This means the wheels don’t flex and move as much, translating into better handling.

Smooth welds are seen at all the major tube junctures. A tapered head tube further improves the Apex’s frame stiffness and thereby handling too.

A second set of mounts can be used for another water bottle cage or to store tools.

A SRAM Apex 1 groupset is the drivetrain of choice here.

SRAM has been ahead of Shimano for gravel, mountain biking and now road. Their drivetrains are super durable. A neat stabiliser unit in the rear derailleur ensures the chain doesn’t slap around and accidentally derail off the chain ring. Full hydraulic disc brakes are a must on E-Bikes. The Apex naturally uses SRAM’s hydraulic disc brakes because they integrate perfectly and deliver superb power and modulation on steep, fast descents. The Apex 1 groupset is clean and efficient. It has no and requires no front gears. It therefore doesn’t have a front derailleur, shifter and cable - minimising moving parts.

The right-hand shifter controls the 11 gears that range from an 11-tooth sprocket to a larger 36-tooth one. This is paired to a massive 44-tooth front chainring. For those who are climbing Everest-like climbs, the rear derailleur can accommodate a 42-tooth cassette - but you will need a longer chain to suit.
