XDS E-Spresso S2

The latest E-Spresso S2 is perhaps one of our best value e-bikes. Its relaxed riding position and easy handling will appeal to riders of all levels. And the low-step frame makes getting on and off much easier.

There are two versions of the E-Spresso; the S2 (which we'll cover here) and the S2i8.

The main difference between the options are the gears. This S2 comes with a traditional gear setup, something you're most likely used to. And the S2i8 comes with an internal gear system. Otherwise, they are both identical.

IT’S A MID-DRIVE

First, it’s a mid-drive e-bike. This means the heaviest part of the bike is in the middle (and at the lowest point). This lowers the E-Spresso’s centre of gravity and, therefore, improves handling - similar to a normal bike.

So for riders who are a little unsure or haven't ridden a bike in a while, this is going to be a significant consideration.

Second, mid-drive units deliver higher torque than hub drive units. This makes it much easier to climb hills and delivers quicker acceleration - perfect for constant stop/start situations (like commuting).

THE GEARS

The S2 comes built with microSHIFT's excellent mid-range gears.

There's a trigger shifter on the handlebar that quickly and precisely changes gears. To simplify things, there's 1 front gear that's paired to 8 rear gears.

Having the motor assist you up to 25km/h just means you don't need as many gears; you have a lot of extra torque to assist.

No front gears means a less maintenance too. There's no front derailleur, gear cable or shifter; so a lot less moving parts.

It's also worth mentioning; because this is an e-bike, the drivetrain has to cope with more power, so it's important hat you keep it clean and use a good quality chain lubricant.

THE BATTERY

The battery is integrated in the down tube. And it can be charged on the bike in your garage, or taken inside.

The battery is composed of cells from Panasonic. It’s tested to the highest international standards. And it has inbuilt protection to protect the battery against power spikes - improving longevity.

And at 396Wh, it's perfect for family bike rides, general fitness and commuting to work.

THE DISPLAY

The clear LED display shows key metrics such as Power Assist Level (5 levels), Battery Level, Distance, Total Distance and Speed.

There’s a control on the handlebar that allows you to adjust the assistance level (power) at 5 levels.

LOW AND MANEUVERABLE

The frame itself is quite unique. Made from aluminium, XDS has shed weight as much as possible from the bike. The very, very low step-through frame makes mounting and dismounting much easier. Not only is it a great option for the ladies, we often have men buying the E-Spresso too.

The rack will easily accommodate a rack top bag, and full-length mudguards make riding in wet conditions much more bearable.
