20" Scott Roxter 200

The Scott Roxter 200 is a 20in kids mountain bike for young riders ready for real trails. It has a 63mm suspension fork, hydraulic disc brakes, 7-speed gearing and 2.2in knobbly tyres. It fits kids from 115cm tall, with a maximum total weight of 50kg for rider, bike and gear.

Built for small hands

The parts a child touches are sized for them, not scaled down from an adult bike:

• Brakes: Tektro hydraulic disc brakes with short-reach levers, so small fingers can reach and pull them properly. Hydraulic brakes need far less hand strength than cable brakes to stop the bike, which matters most on a steep descent.
• Gears: Shimano Revo twist-grip shifting. Kids change gear by rolling the grip, which is easier than pushing thumb levers and doesn't need them to take a hand off the bar.
• Cranks: short 114mm cranks, so knees don't come up too high at the top of each pedal stroke.
• Cockpit: a 540mm riser bar with small-diameter Syncros Kids grips, for a secure hold with small hands.

A fork tuned for light riders

The SR Suntour XCT-JR fork has 63mm of travel and a softer spring set up for a child's weight. A fork set up for adults barely moves under a 25kg rider. This one does its job, taking the sting out of roots and rocks and keeping the front wheel on the ground.

Gears for climbing

The 7-speed Shimano drivetrain pairs a 28T chainring with an 11-34T cassette.

The bigger cogs at the back give kids an easy gear for climbing hills without having to walk. The chainring has a guard to keep clothes and legs clear of the teeth.

Tyres and wheels

The Kenda Karma 2 tyres are 20 x 2.2in, wide and knobbly for grip on dirt, gravel and loose trails. The wheels run on Formula hubs with 6-bolt disc rotors, 160mm front and rear.

Is the Roxter 200 the right bike for your child?

The Roxter 200 weighs 9.9kg. That's the trade-off for a suspension fork and hydraulic brakes. For a child at the bottom of the size range, it's roughly half their bodyweight, which a new or nervous rider will notice on climbs and when lifting the bike.

It's the right choice for kids who already ride confidently and want to tackle trails, jumps and rougher ground.

For a child just moving up to a 20in bike, or mostly riding bike paths and around the neighbourhood, the Scott Scale 200 is the lighter option.

It shares the Roxter's 20in wheels, 7-speed gearing with an 11-34T cassette and hydraulic disc brakes, but swaps the suspension fork for a rigid alloy one. That brings the weight down to 8.8kg without pedals. It fits kids from 115 to 125cm.
