Cannondale Habit HT 1 (2026)

The Habit HT 1 is a 29in alloy trail hardtail with a 130mm fork, and the numbers behind it tell you what Cannondale was aiming at.

The head angle is 64 degrees, which is slacker than most full-suspension trail bikes were five years ago. The seat tube angle is 76 degrees, so your weight sits forward over the cranks when you climb rather than dragging behind the bottom bracket.

Read the parts list the same way.

TRP Gemini 4-piston brakes with a 203mm front rotor, Maxxis Minion DHF 2.5in and DHR II 2.4in tyres, 780mm bars on a 35mm stem, and a dropper post fitted from new.

Those are the parts choices you make when the bike is going to be pointed downhill at speed.

A cross-country hardtail at this level gets 2-piston brakes, 2.25in fast-rolling tyres and a rigid seatpost.

If you want one bike that can ride the same trails your mates ride on 120mm full-suspension bikes, this is the reason the Habit HT exists.

The weight question

The Habit HT 1 is not a light bike. Independent testing has put it around 15.7kg, and that is heavier than several hardtails at a similar price.

The weight is not a mistake.

It is the parts: 4-piston brakes, big rotors, EXO-casing Minions, a 130mm air fork and a dropper post all weigh more than the lighter alternatives a spec sheet could have used to hit a number.

What that means on the trail:

You will feel it on long climbs, and you will not feel it on anything technical or fast. The tyres are the single biggest impact if it bothers you.

Swapping the rear DHR II for a faster-rolling tread (like the Maxxis Dissector or Maxxis Forekaster V2).

And setting both up tubeless on the tubeless-ready WTB rims, removes meaningful rotating weight without touching the frame or the brakes.

SmartForm C2 alloy frame with UDH

The frame is SmartForm C2 alloy with a tapered headtube, Boost 148 rear spacing, a BSA 73 threaded bottom bracket and StraightShot internal cable routing. It is dropper-post compatible as standard, which is why the TranzX post fits perfectly.

The detail worth understanding is the UDH hanger. UDH is SRAM's Universal Derailleur Hanger standard, and it does two things for an owner.

It is a single hanger design shared across hundreds of frames, so a replacement is stocked at almost any bike shop instead of being a frame-specific part you wait weeks for.

It also means the frame can accept a SRAM Transmission drivetrain later, because Transmission derailleurs mount directly to the UDH interface rather than to a hanger. On a bike this size of investment, that is a genuine upgrade path.

The threaded BSA 73 bottom bracket matters for the same reason. Threaded shells are quieter over time and cheaper to service than pressed-in designs, which is what you want on a bike that will see wet Victorian winters.

RockShox Recon Silver RL, 130mm

The fork is a RockShox Recon Silver RL with 130mm of travel, a DebonAir air spring, Motion Control damping and a 42mm offset on a 15x110mm Boost axle.

The air spring is the part to note at this level, because it means the fork is tuned to your weight by adding or removing air rather than by replacing a coil. The Motion Control damper gives you a rebound adjustment and a firm-up lever for climbing.

It is not a Pike or a Lyrik and it will not hug the ground the way a Charger damper does. It is a serviceable, adjustable, rebuildable fork, and it is the single most common first upgrade on this bike once a rider (if ever) outgrows it.

Shimano CUES U6000 11-speed

The drivetrain is the latest Shimano CUES U6000 with an 11-speed shifter and rear derailleur.

CUES is Shimano's consolidated component platform. It was introduced to replace the sprawl of Altus, Acera, Alivio and lower-tier Deore with one system.

The practical benefit is compatibility and parts supply:

CUES parts are designed to interchange across the range and across speeds, so a worn shifter or derailleur can be replaced years from now without a hunt for a discontinued match.

U6000 sits at the Deore-equivalent level of that range, and it uses Shimano's Linkglide tooth profile, which is built for durability under load rather than for the lightest possible shift.

On gearing, a 30T ring with an 11-50T cassette gives a 0.60 low gear ratio.

That is a genuine climbing gear, low enough for sustained steep pitches without standing. The 11-tooth top end runs out before the fast descents do, but on a 15.7kg hardtail on Victorian trails you are braking on those sections, not pedalling.

Brakes, wheels and tyres

The TRP Gemini brakes are 4-piston hydraulic with a 203mm front and 180mm rear rotor. Four pistons give more pad contact and more consistent power than the 2-piston brakes usually fitted at this level.

And the 203mm front rotor gives more leverage and better heat management on long descents. On a hardtail, where the rear wheel loses traction earlier, front brake control is what actually slows you down.

The wheels are WTB ST i30 TCS 2.0 rims, 32 hole, tubeless ready, with a 30mm internal width on Shimano TC500 Boost hubs.

A 30mm internal is a wide rim, and it matters with the tyres fitted:

It holds a 2.5in casing in a squarer profile, so the side knobs sit where they can bite when you lean the bike rather than folding under.

The tyres are a Maxxis Minion DHF 29x2.5in front and a DHR II 29x2.4in rear, both EXO casing and tubeless ready. That pairing is the default on enduro and trail bikes for a reason, and both the rims and tyres are tubeless ready, so the conversion is a valve, a tape check and sealant.

Dropper post and cockpit

A TranzX internal dropper is fitted from new, with travel scaled by frame size: 100mm on Small, 120mm on Medium, 130mm on Large and X-Large. Cockpit is a Cannondale 3 riser bar at 780mm wide with 15mm of rise, a 35mm zero-degree stem and a WTB Solano saddle.

The dropper is the single component that changes how a hardtail descends more than anything else on the list, and it is the one some bikes at this price still leave off.

Sizing

Four sizes: Small, Medium, Large and X-Large, all on 29in wheels. Cannondale's size guidance runs roughly 5'0" to 5'5" for Small, 5'4" to 5'10" for Medium, 5'7" to 6'1" for Large and 5'10" to 6'6" for X-Large.

Those ranges overlap, and on a bike with this geometry the overlap is a real decision.

If you sit in this overlap region it's (almost) always better to go bigger. This is because:

• When you're standing, you'll feel more centred over the bike, rather than feeling like you'll tip over the front.
• When you size up, you get a longer front end. This means the Habit HT 1 feels much more stable under you on fast fireroads and trails.
• The larger size has a taller front end. This means you're in a more relaxed riding position and you're not pushing back with your arms to hold yourself up; reducing neck strain.

How much does the Cannondale Habit HT 1 weigh?

Cannondale does not publish a claimed weight. Independent testing has measured a Habit HT 1 at around 15.7kg, which is heavy for a hardtail.

The weight comes from the descending-focused parts: 4-piston brakes, a 203mm front rotor, EXO-casing Maxxis Minion tyres, a 130mm air fork and a dropper post.

Converting the tubeless-ready wheels and tyres to tubeless is the easiest way to cut rotating weight.

Is the Habit HT 1 a cross-country bike?

No. A 64 degree head angle, a 130mm fork and 2.5in Minion tyres are trail and light-enduro numbers. It climbs well seated thanks to the 76 degree seat angle, but it is built to descend, not to race cross-country.

What is the difference between the Habit HT 1 and the Habit HT 2?

Both share the SmartForm C2 alloy frame and the same geometry.

The HT 1 is the higher-specced build, with the 4-piston TRP Gemini brakes, the RockShox Recon Silver RL air fork and the Maxxis Minion DHF and DHR II tyre pairing.

Is Shimano CUES worse than Deore?

CUES U6000 sits at the Deore tier of Shimano's consolidated range.

It uses the Linkglide tooth profile, which is designed for durability under load and long service life rather than the lightest shift action.

With a 30T ring and an 11-50T cassette, the low gear is comparable to a 12-speed setup. The practical advantage is parts availability: CUES components are designed to interchange across the range.

Can the Habit HT 1 be upgraded to a SRAM Transmission drivetrain?

The frame uses a UDH hanger, which is the mounting interface SRAM Transmission derailleurs require. The frame is compatible. Talk to our workshop about what the full conversion involves.

Are the wheels and tyres tubeless ready?

Yes. The WTB ST i30 TCS 2.0 rims and both Maxxis EXO tyres are tubeless ready. The bike ships with tubes, and our workshop can convert it at the point of sale.
