20" Scott Contrail 200

The Scott Contrail 200 is a lightweight 20in kids bike for school runs, bike paths and family rides.

At 7.9kg, it's the lightest of the Scott 20in kids bikes in our range. It has 7 gears, kid-sized brake levers and a kickstand, and fits kids from 115cm tall.

Why light matters on a kids bike

A 7.9kg bike is a much bigger share of a child's bodyweight than an adult bike is of an adult's. Every kilo saved makes the bike easier to pedal up hills, quicker to get moving from a standstill, and easier for a child to control, turn and lift.

That's especially true for kids moving up from a 16in bike. The Contrail 200 gives them gears and bigger wheels without a big jump in weight.

The weight comes off in the right places: an alloy frame and rigid fork, V-brakes instead of discs, and 1.75in tyres instead of wide mountain bike rubber.

Brakes made for small hands

The Tektro V-brakes use kid-specific levers that are easier for small hands to reach and squeeze. V-brakes are light, simple and cheap to maintain. Like all rim brakes, they lose some stopping power in the wet, so it's worth teaching kids to brake a little earlier on rainy days.

Gears for everyday riding

Seven gears through a Shimano Tourney derailleur, with a 12-28T cassette. That's plenty for flat suburbs, school runs and bike paths. On long, steep hills, the easiest gear isn't as low as on the Scale 200 or Roxter 200, which both use an 11-34T cassette.

Tyres and cockpit

The Kenda Booster tyres are 20 x 1.75in, a fast-rolling tread for footpaths and bike paths, with enough grip for gravel and park trails. The cockpit is sized for kids, with a 520mm riser bar and a short 50mm stem for easy, upright steering.

Contrail 200, Scale 200 or Roxter 200?

All three are Scott 20in kids bikes for riders from 115cm, with a 50kg maximum system weight. Choose by where your child rides:

• Contrail 200: the lightest at 7.9kg. V-brakes, a 12-28T cassette, 1.75in tyres and a kickstand. Best for school, paths and family rides.

• Scott Scale 200: 8.8kg without pedals, with hydraulic disc brakes and a wider 11-34T gear range. Best for kids who mix paths with dirt trails and hills.

• Scott Roxter 200: 9.9kg, with a 63mm suspension fork, hydraulic disc brakes and 2.2in tyres. For confident kids riding trails and jumps.
