Girls Bikes – Find the Perfect Bike With Our Range

Choosing the right girl's bike is an essential step in ensuring a safe, enjoyable, and confidence-boosting riding experience.

Whether you're looking for a first bike for a young rider, a durable model for school commutes, or a specialised girls mountain bike for off-road adventures, there are many factors to consider when making a selection.

At Ivanhoe Cycles, we offer a wide range of bikes for girls, designed to provide comfort, safety, and confidence for riders of all ages.

Girls Bike Size Range

Selecting the correct bike size is crucial for comfort and safety. However - because most parents don't have unlimited funds - the size needs to accommodate long-term growth.

Girls bikes come in a variety of wheel sizes, typically ranging from 12-inch for toddlers to 26-inch for older children (at least 9 years old).

12-inch Girls Bikes

12-inch bikes are suitable for girls from 80cm - 100cm.

These bikes have pedal brakes (also called coaster brakes or foot brakes) and no hand brakes.

Some great options include:

14-inch Girls Bikes

14-inch bikes are from 85cm to 105cm.

These are popular because they allow for a little extra growth.

Plus, the larger diameter wheels add control and stability to help girls gain confidence faster.

And these 14-inch girls bikes are made by the ByK brand. They are very light and ergonomic; definitely one of our best designed girls bikes.

In addition to the coaster brake, 14-inch girls bikes come with a hand brake as well.

16-inch Girls Bikes

This size is designed for girls that are 90cm to 110cm in height.

These bikes have 16-inch diameter wheels.

Important:

16-inch girls bikes come in various frame sizes - which is different from the 16-inch diameter wheel size.

For taller than average girls, we'd suggest the Mongoose Missygoose 16 and GT Siren 16 girls bikes.

The frames on these bikes are a little taller and longer than the others in our range, so they are better for long-term growth.

And for average height riders OR riders on the cusp of a 16-inch bike, the Liv Adore 16 is a very well designed, lightweight girls bike.

18-inch Girls Bikes

Suitable for riders from 95cm to 115cm, 18-inch girls bikes are our go-to size for most 5 year olds.

Choosing girls bikes for 5 year olds can be a little tricky.

They are on the verge of outgrowing a 16-inch but not quite ready for a 20-inch.

Of course, there are exceptions.

Some girls that are slightly shorter than average will find the larger 16-inch bikes (like the Missygoose and Siren above) to be a better fit.

Examples of our 18-inch girls bikes are:

20-inch Girls Bikes

Designed for girls from 110cm to 130cm.

This is the first size with proper gears. And as such, it's worth zooming out and explaining the 3 different types of 20 inch bikes.

Type 1 is a single gear with coaster brake plus at least 1 hand brake. It's the simplest and most of these bikes can be fitted with training wheels (Type 2 and Type 3 cannot).

Type 2 is a mix. It has 3 gears, coaster/foot brake and front hand brake. This type of girls bike gives kids the flexibility of gears with the coaster brake that they are comfortable with.

Type 3 has no coaster brake.

There's a hand brake for front and rear brakes. And gears range from 6, 7, 8 or 9 speed.

It may sound a little more complicated but the reality is most girls are fast learners and they adapt to using hand brakes and gears very quickly.

It's also worth noting that these 20-inch girls bikes come in 2 styles:

  • Street bikes
  • Mountain bikes (MTBs)

Street bikes tend to be Type 1 and 2 girls bikes. MTBs are mostly Type 3.

24-inch Girls Bikes

Designed for riders between 125cm and 150cm.

Most 24-inch girls bikes will have multiple gears and minimal foot brake options (ByK E540 Girls Coaster).

Just like the other wheel-sizes, there are smaller and larger frames.

Examples of a smaller frame are the:

For riders on the sizing edge of a 24-inch bike (usually early to mid-7 year olds or about to turn 8), the girls bikes above have a low frame (vertical length) and shorter reach (horizontal length) than most of our other options.

For average to tall riders, there's the:

26-inch Girls Bikes

This is the biggest girls bike size before going into adult sizing (27.5-inch wheel and XS frame).

There are Street versions and MTB (Mountain Bike) versions of these available.

26-inch girls Street bikes are lighter because they don't have front suspension. An example is the ByK E620 Girls.

MTB girls bikes have suspension. The suspension adds weight (negative) but it does make the steering calmer and more controlled. Translating into confidence for conservative riders.

Examples are:

A really good mix of light dirt, gravel and bike paths are these girls bikes:

And for a super high-end performance dual-suspension mountain bike, we also have the new Liv Faith.
