Mongoose Bikes History

Mongoose was founded in 1974 by Skipp Hess.

The brand started producing BMX bikes to cater to the growing BMX segment. Mongoose's first product was not actually a bike, it was the Motomag One Wheel.

It was instantly popular with BMX riders for its durability.

Soon after, Mongoose started producing bikes to fulfill the growing demand for BMX bikes.

To this day, iconic BMXs like the Supergoose and Team Mongoose are rare collectors items.

During the 1990's as mountain biking developed, Mongoose released several models of mountain bikes (MTB) including the Rockadile and Switchback.

Present day, Mongoose are known for race and freestyle BMXs and their kids bikes.

Mongoose BMX

Mongoose have 2 different types of BMXs.

The Legion BMX range is designed for freestyle, dirt jumps and stunts. Mongoose's Title BMXs are designed for racing.

More information can be found on our Mongoose BMX page.

In short, the Legion range starts with the Legion L16. It's a kids BMX designed for riders from 5 years old. Then there's the Legion L18 which is designed for older kids from 7 years old.

The Legion LXS is the transition BMX between kids and adult sized BMXs.

It has full sized 20-inch wheels but with a compact frame (18-inch top tube, just like the L18).

The Legion L10 and upwards have full-sized frames, with a minimum length of 20-inches. This size will suit riders from 10 years through to adults.

Mongoose Kids Bikes

Our range starts with the 12-inch Mongoose LilGoose kids bikes which are designed for kids from 2-4 years old.

Next is the Mongoose Missygoose 16 (girls) and Mitygoose 16 (boys) 16-inch bikes. Designed for riders from 4 years old, these are built with aluminium frames and kitted with fun accessories that kids will love.

The Racer X (boys) and Ladygoose (girls) are examples of 20-inch kids bikes. These bikes are designed for kids from 6 years old. They don't have gears. There's a foot brake and front handbrake. And these bikes can also be fitted with training wheels.

For riders who prefer multiple gears, Mongoose has the Rockadile 20 mountain bikes.

These have no foot brakes. There's a front and a rear handbrake instead. Training wheels cannot be fitted to these.

Lastly, the Rockadile 24 is designed for riders from 7-8 years old.
