Explore the Full Range at Ivanhoe Cycles
Our boys 20 inch bike range covers simple neighbourhood cruisers right through to front-suspension trail bikes.
At the simpler end, single-speed models from brands like Giant, Haro and Apollo remain a reliable choice for kids who spend most of their time on footpaths and flat suburban bike paths. They’re light, easy to look after and forgiving enough for riders still building their skills.
For boys who want to get out onto trails and mixed terrain, a multi-gear front-suspension model changes everything. Bikes like the GT Stomper and Haro Shredder bring proper 20 inch boys mountain bike geometry into a manageable 20 inch package, with knobby tyres, a suspension fork and disc or V-brake stopping power made to rougher ground.
For riders more drawn to parks, street riding and tricks, our 20 inch BMX bikes collection covers that category in more detail.
Finding the Right Fit is Everything
Frame size on a kids bike matters more than most parents think. A bike that’s too big will feel uncontrollable and slow development; but a bike that’s too small won’t last long before they’ve outgrown it.
For a 20 inch boys bike, the key measurements are standover height and reach. The rider should be able to straddle the top tube with both feet flat on the ground and a small gap between the tube and their body. Reach to the handlebars should feel comfortable with a slight bend at the elbows rather than a stretched position.
Brake lever reach also matters on hand-brake models. Many 20 inch bikes include adjustable lever reach screws that bring the levers closer to the bars, making it easier for smaller hands to operate the brakes properly. Our team adjusts these as part of every assembly check, and you can ask for further adjustment at any time.
Choosing the Right Bike for You
Flat suburban paths and footpaths suit a simple single-speed with smooth or semi-slick tyres. The lightweight frame and basic drivetrain make these easy to pedal and control for less confident riders.
Hilly suburban streets and light gravel paths are where gears start to pay off. A 6 or 7 speed drivetrain makes a real difference on anything with regular elevation change, and a wider tyre gives better grip on loose or uneven surfaces.
For actual trail riding, front suspension and knobby tyres are the key additions. A front suspension fork absorbs trail vibration and small obstacles that would otherwise be jarring on a rigid frame, and wider tyres grip loose dirt far more reliably.
All bikes purchased from Ivanhoe Cycles are fully assembled and safety-checked before collection, whether you buy online or in store.
Keeping the 20 Inch Boys Bike Running Well
A 20 inch boys bike takes a fair amount of punishment from a young rider, and a few simple habits keep it running well between workshop visits.
Chain lubrication is one of the most important things to do. Apply a thin coat of bike chain lube after wet rides and every few weeks during normal use, wiping away excess before dirt builds up. A clean chain is going to reduce drivetrain wear on multi-speed bikes.
Tyre pressure is easy to overlook but it plays a big part in performance and puncture resistance. Make sure to check the pressure printed on the tyre sidewall and top up with a floor pump every couple of weeks.
On front-suspension models, check that the fork compresses smoothly and doesn’t bottom out on normal bumps. A fork that bottoms out on small impacts usually means it’s running on too little air pressure or coil preload, which our workshop can quickly change.
